Seasonal hiring underway but likely won’t make up for layoffs

Won’t have the numbers till afternoon (and the DOL has been later and later in delivering the report), but here’s what I expect to say:Like a truck in the mud, the Georgia economy continues to spin its wheels, moving modestly forward but lacking the traction to get back on the road. Economists say many companies are holding back on hiring, while others have burned through federal help and are cutting staff that they are no longer required to keep, so that the usual robust seasonal hiring this year is anemic. Moreover, job growth is still being undercut by recession-level layoffs and caution about spending.

Two large properties along the Atlanta Beltline, on the city's Westside, have been snapped up by developers in recent weeks. Will teacher concerns over COVID cause more of them to flee classroom?

In the past few days, readers have sent me emails calling teachers “lazy” for not wanting to juggle both online and in-person classes. They’re calling teachers “crybabies” for resigning rather than risk bringing COVID-19 home to their families and even “un-American” for insisting their students wear masks.
