The hardest part of scent work isn’t always finding the scent…

Sometimes it’s knowing whether your dog’s alert is telling you the truth — or if the world around them is getting in the way.

She had just worked through a thunderstorm, and it showed. Her tail was tucked, she was clearly scared, and her alerts were anything but confident.

When she went to the first object out of the gate, I immediately thought, *it’s probably the orange blower.*

But her behavior made me pause.

I second-guessed myself because her alert just wasn’t strong. Was she actually telling me she found odor, or was she trying to work through the stress of the storm while still wanting to work and please me?

So I waited her out.

I let her work through it instead of rushing to make a decision for her.

And when she went back to it, I called it — **with no hesitation.**

That moment meant even more because during her shoulder injury, we focused A LOT on scent work. It was one of the few things we could still do together, and I learned so much about reading her through it.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that **training and trialing are VERY different — no matter the sport.**

In training, you know the environment. You know the routine. You know what your dog is capable of.

In a trial, you have to read the dog standing in front of you *in that moment* — even when the weather, nerves, distractions, or stress are changing how they communicate with you.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing your dog’s alert.

It’s knowing when something outside of the search is affecting how they communicate with you.

When you and your breeder both have tears in your eyes after your 7 year old dog points her very first bird 🥹 that’s when you know breeding is so much more than just raising a puppy for them! ❤️

Thank you NoSam Kennels for all you do for your dogs and their families!

This is why I will always choose ethical breeding! 🙌🏻

Our two July agility trial weekends were some of the hardest since Rain’s shoulder injury.

These were our first trials with contacts since coming back, and after four weeks of practicing, I honestly thought we’d pick up right where we left off.

We didn’t.

After our CPE trial, I was heartbroken. I questioned everything - even whether Rain still enjoyed agility. I was frustrated, discouraged, and honestly considered quitting.

But then I started talking with people who have achieved so much in this sport. One of them simply said, “I can help you. We can fix that.”

Those words gave me hope.

After our CPE trial, we had an AKC trial the following weekend. I treated it as training. And although it wasn’t perfect, there were glimpses of the team we know we can be. I saw them. Others saw them. And it reminded me that we’re still worth investing in.

Last week at physical therapy, we got another piece of good news - Rain’s shoulders look great, and our therapist doesn’t believe pain is what’s causing what we’re seeing. One more step toward finding the answers.

Then something happened that I’ll never forget.

A little gecko ran across the therapy room, and of course Rain chased it! (No gecko was harmed)

Later, I got in my car, and the radio was talking about the spiritual meaning of lizards.🦎 How Lizards symbolize renewal, adaptation, and letting go of what no longer serves you.

I immediately teared up.

Because for me, that was God reminding me that healing isn’t about becoming who we were before. We have the opportunity to adapt and become a new, stronger team together now!

I’ve spent so much time wanting us to be the team we were before the injury.

But the truth is... we’ll never be that team again.

And maybe that’s exactly the point.

We’re becoming a new team. A stronger team. One with a deeper connection.

And I truly believe God sent me that lizard during our PT appointment to remind me - He isn’t finished with us yet.

Our story isn’t over!

Because Healing isn’t about becoming who we were before. It’s about becoming who we’re meant to be now!

I know how special this dog is to be able to do both of these things, 36 hours apart!🥹

We are both learning each of these new sports and the journey has been a ton of fun!

Here is your “push” or “sign” to do something you have always wanted to do or been thinking to do!

Don’t wait - JUST DO IT! 🤩💪🏻🥳

If you don’t know where to start - comment or message me and I would love to help! ❤️

PSA: Apparently you need to break in your new starter pistol and/or gun before using!

I think I need to start making a list here 😝😂

CPE Trial 🪩 July 2026.

This was the first trial we did all our contacts since our injury happened 11 months ago. It was honestly one of the hardest trials we have done because we weren’t us.

In the moment I was ready to quit and walk away but am so glad we pushed through and did some FEO to help both of us find the fun and our confidence again!

Because for a Novice A dog + handler and only training for 12 months before Rain’s shoulder injury that took her out for 7 months total and 10 months from contacts - it is a LONG time for anyone!

And these pictures and trial reminded me sometimes the goal of “just having fun” is the only goal we may really need in that moment! 💖 It helped us remember why we enjoyed this sport in the first place = having fun together! EndGame Pack || Dog Sports & T-Shirts

How my dog and I got our nickname at the retirement community 🤣 I laugh every time someone calls us it too!

The first time we heard it was during the July 4th golf cart parade we attended with grandma and grandpa in their community a couple years ago!
