As word spread about this book, we decided to go back to press with an expanded edition for national audiences. What started as an effort to help our neighbors in WNC is quickly becoming a literary movement demonstrating the power of Appalachia's stories. The two year anniversary of Hurricane Helene is in September and the political consequences of the region's recovery will extend far beyond North Carolina. Like March, this is a grassroots effort taking on significance far beyond what people expect. When I saw the comic project asking for stories, I knew that the story of animals and animal rescues would be left behind. In a time where the world in the south was shut down, it was Black Friday in reverse for animal rescues. I had to write it. It was seeping from my bones. As a 4th generation natural disaster survivor (The Johnstown Floods) I know the power of story telling among families and communities. I’d heard it before from my family: the smell of flood mud, the pop up shelters in schools that I would later attend, pieces of pavement floating, like islands-like a pool raft in an ocean of debris that you don’t want to beach yourself at. But never had I experienced it until Helene.

We are honored to be featured among some of the best storytellers and nationally featured comic book artist to tell the story of Hurricane Helene in Appalachia. From Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and Eisner Award winners—-Islands in the Sky: A People’s History of Hurricane Helene is a testament to the power of community and healing.

The story amplifies the many volunteers that came literally to the rescue—-to rescue animals and animal owners in need. Thank you to our committed volunteers.
