John plays an ex-classmate of Frasier Crane’s from Oxford who is now a marriage counsellor. Another British comedy legend stars in the new series of Frasier, Nicholas Lyndhurst. Matthew first hit our screens in the UK with a guest role in sitcom Charles in Charge in 1986 (airing a year earlier in the US). He would go on to appear on TV throughout the late 80s winning his first recurring role in sitcom Second Chance in 1987. The following year he completed his movie debut in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon opposite River Phoenix. We all know what Matthew accomplished on TV next. RIP Matthew Perry.

A childhood memory and on this day in 1980 the Swiss/German children’s adventure Heidi aired its fifth episode on BBC1 (originally airing in Switzerland in 1978). Here are the opening credits - who can still whistle along to the theme tune!! As a kid did you even realise it was dubbed? Here’s a clip of that episode too with a comparison of the English dub and original German dialogue - perhaps you’ll hear Heidi’s real voice for the first time. The 26 part series was repeated in 1983 and 1986 too.

Happy Birthday to Stefanie Powers today. Here’s Stefanie with Sir Anthony Hopkins in the mini-series Hollywood Wives which aired in 1985 (the year after the original series of Hart to Hart finished). The two played husband and wife in the glitzy drama and you can see a clip by following the link in our story. The series was based on a novel by Jackie Collins and boasted an all star cast also including Candice Bergen, Joanna Cassidy, Roddy McDowall and Suzanne Summers to name a few.
