“I like any song that has a good story…that says what it has to say simply. A repetitious phrase helps put the story across. A song should have a lilting melody.” - Sam Cooke

At RIFF 2018 we screened the short film SACHEEN, a moving documentary about the first Native American woman to stand onstage at the Academy Awards. In 1973 Sacheen Littlefeather was asked by Marlon Brando to attend on his behalf and not accept his Best Actor award for The Godfather as a way to protest the stereotyping of Native Americans in the entertainment industry. This caused incredible backlash against Sacheen for decades.

TONIGHT, nearly 50 years later, the Academy is issuing an apology to Sacheen in a special presentation along with live Native American performances. You can stream it here beginning at 8pm EST: https://youtu.be/wNHtImiC90o

From director Peter Spirer: “If you haven’t seen Sacheen Breaking the Silence, tonight would be a good night, as the Academy apologizes for what occurred that night back in ‘73. One of our goals before making the film was to let Sacheen tell her story in her own words. The other was to get the Academy to apologize. One goal I knew we could accomplish, the other a far away dream, but it’s happening. Dreams do come true. Congratulations Sacheen, your long awaited day is here.”

SACHEEN Breaking the Silence can be streamed for free on Amazon Prime Video.
