Teacher arrested for hitting Pre-K students .

Claxton, Georgia (October 17, 2025) – The GBI has arrested and charged Tanesha E. Herrington, age 47, of Claxton, Georgia, and Courtney Anne Dutton, age 37, of Glennville, Georgia, following a child abuse investigation at Claxton Elementary School.

Herrington has been charged with eight counts of Cruelty to Children in the First Degree, and Dutton has been charged with one count of Failure to Report Child Abuse.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the Claxton Police Department (CPD) requested the GBI to assist in a child abuse investigation.

The CPD received an anonymous tip that a Pre-K teacher, Tanesha Herrington, had been abusing students in her classroom. Agents obtained video footage from a security camera located inside Herrington’s classroom.

The footage depicts Herrington hitting two students repeatedly in the face, grabbing a student by the throat, forcefully lifting students by the arms while they were lying on the floor asleep, slapping a student on the arm and then pushing the student, and throwing a bookbag at a student who was seated on the ground. The videos include incidents from both the current and previous academic years.

Due to the substantial amount of video footage still under review, additional victims may be identified, potentially resulting in further charges.

This investigation is active and ongoing. If anyone has any information, please contact the Claxton Police Department at 912-739-2121 or the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Statesboro at 912-871-1121. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS(8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the file will be given to the Atlantic Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Liberty County school system.

The safety and security of our students and staff remain our top priority. Beginning Monday, October 27, 2025, weapons detection systems will be installed at all middle schools, high schools and Liberty College and Career Academy across our district. This step is part of our continued efforts to provide a safe and secure learning environment.

This is a continuation of our current safety infrastructure and is as simple and routine as the safety measures you experience when entering a concert venue, sporting event, or federal building. Our goal is for school safety to feel just as normal and reassuring.

We want to assure you that:

All students and visitors will pass through the detectors upon entry.
This measure is preventive.
Our goal is to ensure a safe, welcoming, and disruption-free school.

We understand you may have questions and to support you, we have provided detailed information with FAQs and a supporting video on our website.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools safe. Together, we can maintain an environment where students feel secure and ready to learn. Excellence in Everything!

Sincerely,

Debra B. Frazier
Superintendent

Scandal Hits Schoolhouse:
Glynn County Board Member Suspended Amid Federal Fraud Indictment

BRUNSWICK, GA—Public trust in local education has been severely shaken after a sitting member of the Glynn County Board of Education was suspended from her post by Governor Brian Kemp following a federal indictment for conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The scandal has cast a shadow over the district, fueling calls for increased financial oversight and raising uncomfortable questions about who is leading Southeast Georgia's schools.

Board Member Audrey Gibbons, who represented District 5, was indicted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware on charges alleging she was part of a larger scheme that used a "network of money mules" to launder proceeds from a fraud operation.

The indictment suggests the illicit funds were moved through various transactions, including the purchase of real estate, mobile homes, and automobiles.

Governor’s Order and Public Outcry
The suspension, effective immediately, followed the recommendation of a Review Commission established by the Governor.

The Commission determined that the indictment "adversely affects the Glynn County Board of Education's operations and public confidence."

The news has generated shock and outrage across Brunswick, where parents are already concerned about budget constraints and a widespread teacher shortage plaguing the district.

"How are we supposed to trust the people running our schools when they are under federal indictment?" questioned Megan Wells, a concerned parent of a Glynn County student.

"This isn't just about a legal case; it’s about the integrity of the board that manages millions of taxpayer dollars and makes decisions about our children’s future.

It's a huge distraction from the real work of keeping teachers in classrooms."

Focus Shifts to Financial Accountability
The controversy has magnified existing public demand for greater transparency in the school system's finances.

Critics are now leveraging the scandal to push for Mandatory Audits:

Demands for more rigorous, independent, and publicly accessible audits of all school system expenditures, especially those related to real property and large contracts.

Ethics Review: A full review of the ethical standards and financial disclosure requirements for all elected and appointed school officials to prevent future conflicts of interest.

The Glynn County Board of Education released a brief statement confirming the suspension and asserting its commitment to "maintaining transparency and upholding the integrity of our school board," but offered no further comment on the criminal allegations.

With the suspended member's term set to run until 2028, the district now faces the difficult process of managing public anxiety and determining how to fill a crucial vacancy amidst one of the biggest political storms to hit local education in years.

Second Chick-fil-A in Liberty County gets approval.

Flemington City Council approved the initial design for a Chick-fil-A to be built at the corner of Highway 84 and Flemington Village Boulevard.

The store will have two drive-through lanes, and its 5,000-square-foot restaurant will have a seating capacity of 70.

Andrew Wilson, an engineer with Bowman, the site architects, cautioned council members that a full set of construction drawings must be done and those have to go through permitting.

“We don’t have a date nailed down,” he told council members. “It all depends on getting our permits in order to start construction.”

Should plans be finished and go through permitting, though, Wilson said it is likely work on the restaurant could start within six months.

According to the initial design, entrance and exit to the restaurant would be from Flemington Village Boulevard.

According to the initial building plans this location would bring back the very much missed playground for kids also.
