- ATLANTA, Nov 7 (Reuters) – Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential election victory has sent shockwaves through Black American communities, which voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris despite a campaign by her Republican rival to court Black men.

While Trump made gains among Black Americans in North Carolina and some in the community celebrated his win, nationally his vote share among Black voters was unchanged in the Tuesday vote from 2020, according to an exit poll conducted by Edison Research, which showed a much larger swing towards Trump among Hispanic voters.

Black voters were important to President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in 2020, when Harris was also elected as the first Black and first Asian-American U.S. vice president. #2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency. He won Michigan on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the “blue wall” along with Pennsylvania — the one-time Democrat-leaning, swing states that all went for Trump in 2016 before flipping to President Joe Biden in 2020.

His Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, called Trump on Wednesday afternoon to concede the race and congratulate him. A short time later, Biden also called Trump to congratulate him and to invite the president-elect to the White House, formally kicking off the transition ahead of Inauguration Day, the White House said. Biden also called Harris.

Many events throughout history have captivated sports, but none garnered such worldwide attention as the heavyweight boxing championship bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman 50 years ago in Kinshasa, Zaire.

The spectacle on Oct. 30, 1974, oozed with symbolism and Black Power never seen before in sports. Not only were the combatants Black — and would make the biggest purse in boxing history at that time — but the face of the promotion was Don King, who would become one of the premier boxing promoters of the 20th century. The bout was also the first heavyweight championship fight in Africa, with a concert festival with musical legends in the lineup leading up to the fight.

While not the official title, the bout became known as The Rumble in the Jungle, created by Ali while he was training in front of reporters. The conclusion of the fight was the beginning of the end of Foreman’s first run as a fighter, and the victory helped cement Ali’s legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time..
