Not every development conversation needs an answer.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing a leader can do is create space for someone else to think, reflect, and discover their own path forward.

That is one of the fundamental shifts that happens when leaders begin developing coaching skills.

When you're investing in coach training, it's important to understand what's behind the program.

ICF Level 1 Accreditation signals that the training has been designed around established standards for professional coach education.

For participants, that means developing coaching competencies through structured learning, practice, feedback, and mentor coaching rather than simply learning coaching theory.

At the Institute for Corporate Coaching, we're proud to offer an ICF Level 1 Accredited Coach Training Program designed to prepare professionals to coach with greater skill, confidence, and credibility.

A coaching approach means listening for:

• What is being said
• What isn't being said
• The assumptions behind the words
• Opportunities for deeper reflection

Active listening is more than a communication technique. It's an essential coaching competency and a powerful leadership skill.

For established professionals, coaching can create an opportunity to bring years of leadership, industry knowledge, and lived experience into conversations that help others grow.

You aren't starting from zero.

Physicians working on Labor Day isn’t the problem. What happens after Labor Day might be.

The OB-GYN comes back to the same inbox.

The ER physician returns for another shift.

The surgeon still has Tuesday’s schedule.

The family physician still has patients waiting.

The work they missed didn’t disappear because they were covering ours.

None of this is unusual.

That’s actually the point.

Medicine has always required sacrifice. Patients don’t stop getting sick because it’s a holiday.

But somewhere along the way, I think we’ve confused the necessary sacrifice of caring for patients with the unnecessary sacrifice that gets created by systems that leave too little capacity for physicians to recover.

Those are not the same thing.

And the data shows one reason why this capacity is shrinking.

About 65% of physicians report doing at least some work while on vacation. Research has also found an association between working during vacation and higher rates of burnout.

Even time off isn’t always off.

The inbox is waiting.

The patients still need coverage.

Someone has to absorb the work.

And sometimes it feels easier to just keep working.

And eventually, it becomes a retention problem.

Physicians don’t necessarily leave medicine because they stopped caring.

Sometimes they leave because caring has required them to give more than they get back.

So maybe the question after Labor Day isn’t:

Did we thank the physicians who worked?

Perhaps it’s:

What happens for the physician who worked when everyone else comes back?

Do they get the opportunity to recover?

Does someone cover their inbox?

Is there enough capacity on the team for them to actually step away?

Or do they simply keep going?

When we depend on people never needing rest that isn’t resilient.

It’s doing more with less and borrowing capacity from an already strained workforce.

And eventually, that becomes unsustainable.

Sometimes as burnout.

Sometimes as disengagement.

Sometimes as another physician deciding they can no longer stay.

Retention is creating a healthcare system where physicians are allowed to be human, too.

Before offering the solution, try asking:

1. What outcome are you hoping to achieve?

2. What options have you considered?

3. What's getting in the way?

4. What do you think your next step should be?

Better questions create space for better thinking.

Save these for your next leadership conversation.

Micromanagement and accountability are not the same thing.

Leaders can create clear expectations while still giving people room to think, act, and own their responsibilities.

Coaching skills can help leaders make that shift without losing clarity or standards.

Strong delegation does more than free up a leader's schedule.

Done well, it can create opportunities for people to think independently, take ownership, and expand their capabilities.

Leadership becomes more scalable when people are developed rather than simply directed.

Getting the work done matters. Developing the people doing the work matters too.

A coaching approach gives leaders another way to support their teams without always stepping in with the solution.

By asking thoughtful questions, creating accountability, and encouraging reflection, leaders can help people build the confidence to navigate challenges independently.

That's how leadership becomes more than managing performance. It becomes developing potential.
