New Episode!!! šŸŽ™ļø

If you’re heading into the new year with questions, ideas, or that feeling that there’s still so much to figure out, this is a great episode no matter where you are in your flower journey.

I’m joined by Lyndsay Biehl-Mercer of and Shannon Allen of , the voices behind , and we talk about the pressure to make everything look beautiful, the reality of how hard this work can be, and why grit—the good, the bad, and the messy—is what keeps them going.

We dig into being laser focused, getting good at one thing, using simple tools that make life easier, and why mistakes are often just proof that you’re in motion. It felt like a fitting conversation to wrap up the year—real, practical, and encouraging as we head into what’s next.

We would love to know what you think!! šŸŽ§ Listen to the podcast on any platform or visit our website!!

Choosing a Flower of the Year is no small task—especially when you bring together a group of people who live and breathe flowers. I was grateful to join the team selecting Flower Magazine’s 2026 pick, and the conversations were everything you’d expect: thoughtful, passionate, and full of strong feelings about what truly deserves the spotlight.

After weighing so many beautiful contenders, we arrived at a bloom I’m genuinely thrilled about: the Fire Light Hydrangea. It’s a joy to grow, a dream to cut, and the color shift alone is worth pulling up a chair for—creamy whites that slowly blush into pink, then deepen into those rich late-summer burgundy tones we all love. It’s the kind of hydrangea that doesn’t just join your garden; it elevates the whole collection. Reliable, expressive, and impossible to ignore.

Welcoming Fire Light as Flower Magazine’s Flower of the Year feels like a perfect fit, and I can’t wait to see it take center stage throughout 2026. Whether you’re growing it, designing with it, or simply admiring it, I think it’s about to become a new favorite for a lot of us.

This bloom will be featured in the January/February 2026 issue of Flower Magazine, available on December 22— preorder available today at flowermag.com! Please join us in celebrating FLOWERĀ Magazine’s 2026 Flower of the Year: Fire Light Hydrangea!

This week on The Flower Podcast, Scott sits down with Erik Van Der Sluys from Beneficial Insectary, a company dedicated to helping growers work with nature through the use of beneficial insects.

Erik breaks down how natural predators, soil-dwelling hunters, and tiny ā€œgood bugsā€ can support healthier plants and reduce pest pressure long before problems take over. From preventing thrips and fungus gnats to strengthening your overall growing environment, Erik’s insight offers practical guidance any flower farmer can use.

We also talk about how Beneficial Insectary supports growers by providing high-quality beneficial insects and clear, easy-to-follow guidance for integrating them into your farm. Their team works with growers every day, helping them choose the right insects, understand how they function, and build systems where natural balance can thrive.

If you’ve ever wondered how biocontrol fits into your flower farm, this conversation is a thoughtful place to start.

Rethinking Growth?!? No, I’m not talking about farming or the flowers you grow, but………

Our latest episode with also known as Lindsey Mizock, we chat about being intentional with growing your business. A bigger business might not be the best for you.

Lindsey also emphasizes the importance of photographing your flowers well, finding the best angles and natural light to inspire excitement and connection.

Nasturtiums have long been a favorite flower of mine. I was inspired with the idea of growing them as a cut flower for the first time by Erin with !! Probably no surprise!!

I loved how Lindsey not only photographed her floral design, but then captured individual blooms highlighting the beauty of each flower. Thank you for sharing your vision, flowers, and need to fully capture the essence of what we grow or work with!!

The Flower Podcast with Scott

I've been in the floral industry for over 25 years. Although most of that time has been spent in sales for a wholesale company, I share the same passion for flowers as you.

My love for flowers began as a child walking in the footsteps of my grandmother. What started as helping in the vegetable garden grew to expand from the pink petunias to the splendid blossom of viburnum on the family farm. My other grandfather had a love for trees and enjoyed collecting incredible specimens of ginkos and redwoods, not something often seen in Northwest Ohio.

My interest in flowers only grew from there. Throughout childhood, my family let me dabble in the home landscape planting seeds, shrubs, and most of all experimenting with flowers. YES! I was that guy, not with trophies on my wall, but with grow lights and plants in my bedroom.

My floral journey eventually led to a degree in horticulture. Just before graduating, I couldn't decide on a field to pursue,I LIKED THEM ALL. Dr. Alan Armitage, my then advisor at University of Georgia, received a phone call from a floral wholesaler and described the kind of person they were looking for to join the company....
