Arsenal of Democracy Honors 75th Anniversary End of WWII

The weather may not have cooperated for the Arsenal of Democracy’s highly- anticipated Washington DC flyover to commemorate this year’s 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, but the truth is, it was never just about the flyover. It was about thanking and honoring our veterans of WWII, including personnel who were held as POWs or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States, and to thank and honor their families. Here is a photo and video report by Mike Killian

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Due to weather conditions, the aircraft participating in the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, were unable to safely take flight today. The Arsenal of Democracy presented a video tribute on behalf of the Bob and Delores Hope Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense and other sponsors. The tribute includes footage of the rarest WWII aircraft and interviews with veterans participating in the aerial tribute, which can be viewed on the Arsenal of Democracy’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

The authorization to fly through the Washington D.C. restricted airspace will expire today and rescheduling the flying portion of the program is unfortunately not an option.

The Arsenal of Democracy Executive Committee released the following statement regarding being unable to take flight as planned:

“We are disappointed that we could not deliver the planned aerial tribute that our World War II veterans and heroes deserve for their selfless service to our nation and the world. We are, however, pleased to offer the special programming commemorating the end of World War II with never-before-seen footage of many of the aircraft scheduled to participate in the Arsenal of Democracy flyover, exciting footage from the practice flights that took place this week and a thought provoking interview that took place last night with Tuskegee Airman Brigadier General Charles McGee with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.”

“It was a tough call for all of us to make, but at the end of the day it was about the safety and security of the pilots, crews, volunteers, aircraft and all those involved in the aerial tribute. We are thankful for all the local, state and federal support that we received in the planning and postponements of the flyover; they wanted to see the flyover tribute executed just as much as we did. Unfortunately, given all the planning, preparations and organization, including meeting the extensive security criteria that go into such a massive event, there are no plans to reschedule this year. We are grateful for the generosity of our sponsors and all the hard work that was put forth to honor the sacrifices of America’s Greatest Generation.”

POOR LITTLE LAMBS – The Corsairs of Baa Baa Blacksheep

Forty four years ago to the day, on September 23rd, 1976, the famed TV-series Baa Baa Black Sheep first aired on television in the United States. Technically the pilot episode ran on 9/21, but the first one-hour series episode did air on 9/23. It was a seminal moment for many of us who follow vintage military aviation today, especially if we were kids at the time. Here to tell a little of the story about the making of that show, and the aircraft involved is our own Stephen Chapis, revisiting an article “Poor Little Lambs” that he originally wrote some years ago (Warbird Digest #49). With the 45th anniversary coming up next year we are planning something very special for the occasion. We can't say much, but stay tuned! #BaaBaaBlackSheepDay

Scott and Tom Sullivan are brothers with a shared passion for aviation and all things aeronautical. They both grew up as 'garrison brats' as their father was in the Royal Air Force, stationed around the world. From Singapore to remote Scottish islands they were never far from the whiff of AvGas and the distant rumble of jets. The Flyingraphics brand was born from a cunning plan to try and get into airshows for free and draw pictures of Airplanes all day long. With the airshow season pretty much cancelled this year due to COVID-19, finding an aviation event to get excited about has been next to impossible. The show was cancelled, but the museum did host Pete Lerro of Lerro Photography for an exciting vintage aircraft photo shoot.

Yesterday in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II, several warbirds took to the skies for a special fly-over of various related sites throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Riverside County. Today was quite the day! In honor of the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War 2 today (September 2nd), several warbirds took to the skies for a special fly-over of various World War 2 related sites throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Riverside County. I was honored to be asked to be the main photographer on this special flight once again! We had six DC-3/C-47 aircraft (though one departed early), and four T-6/SNJ Texans including the photoship. A big thanks to Stephen Rose and Tom Nightingale who both made this possible for me. It was a crazy hazy day with quite the bumps in the air, but the sight was something to behold for sure.

FOR SALE, classic reproduction WW2 B-3 "Patton" bomber jacket. Purchased new in 1979 from Avirex, it is an authentic, faithful version of the jacket that General Patton had commissioned for himself in WW2. It has the unit patch,"Old Ironsides", reinforced sleeves for riding in tank turret hatches, epaulets and inside "mickey" pockets. Excellent condition, it has only been worn a few times in all these years. The distressed look is as manufactured. This jacket is heavy and is super warm. This jacket is of un-surpassed quality that the jackets manufactured today cannot begin to match. It is as close to an original as can be expected. The jacket is located in Winnipeg, Canada. The price is $1,500.00 USD, plus shipping.

Friend sent this, sorry if it is a duplicate post. I would LOVE to have been standing on that footbridge, with my camera.
Does anyone know of the status of P-47 Thunderbolt Jacky's Revenge? This sadly was the Thunderbolt that crashed into the Hudson River in 2016 killing the pilot. The aircraft was recovered completely intact and in seemingly good condition from the water after the crash. I've always wondered what became of it.
