An Old and Contested Solution to Boost Reading Scores: Phonics

Nothing like using classic folk tales to make phonics engaging, fun and meaningful!😉

As test scores lag, there’s a growing debate between proponents of the “science of reading,” which emphasizes phonics, and traditional educators who prefer to instill a love of literature.

Very excited to share this news.

Last night, our strategic partner, 4x4 Studios received the Appy Award in NYC for best app in the Parenting/Family category. That's 4 awards for Let's Read in 2019!

Let’s Read won an Appy Award in the Family and Parenting category! The team was so excited when we got the news last night!

I love how they explained our app:
“Face it, kiddos love tech. So as we bemoan their screen time, let's hear it for an app that personalizes it with stories "read to" kids from the people they love most, their families. Let's Read makes it easy for family members and friends to make engaging video/audio recordings that are synched to illustrations and text in picture books. If there must be screen time, at least it can be made healthier. Cheers to the app's creators -- and to Grandma!"

In Classic Children’s Books, a Window to Childhood in Past Centuries

This priceless collection of children's books reveals a number of valuable insights about our society, values and "myths".

Remember, there was not even a children's book industry prior to the 1950's so the current size of children's publishing (approximately $2B in 2019) says a lot about the increased involvement of parents in their children's lives.

Rare children’s books, made available online through the Library of Congress, show both the constants and the evolution in children’s literature.

Most of my book Heartland, published in 2018, was finished in 2005 when I was 24 years old. The passages were in different order and form, but it was there.

Countless literary agents turned me down for more than a decade.

That was brutal, but it was the wisdom of the Universe. This country wasn't ready to talk about class, and I wasn't grounded or healed enough to hold space for the thousands of people who have shared their own economic traumas with me since the book was released.

We have all sorts of ideas about how and when our creations should unfold and be seen. But your life's unfolding is part of a bigger Timeline you don't know. Sometimes roadblocks aren't a "no" so much as a "not the right time." Keep going.

If you're looking for a great holiday read, try the Baker's Dozen, the story of a Colonial baker, Van Amsterdam who was well-known for baking St. Nicholas cookies at Christmas.

When an old woman buys a dozen cookies and expects to receive 13, he withholds the last one. Unfortunately, his business goes downhill until she returns. But this time, he gives her an extra measure, and the custom of offering a "Baker's Dozen" or 13 items spreads throughout the colonies.
