14-Oct-2022 “Americana Garage” WRFG 89.3 FM Fridays 8-10 pm. Archives at www.wrfg.org Staff pick for live music this week is Jeremy Porter and the Tucos at the EARL on Tues Oct 18! This Detroit trio is a well-known treasure in the Michigan region, serving up a blue collar brand of garage rock and power pop not unlike their Midwestern brethren Cheap Trick. They are touring behind an expansive new career retrospective called Bottled Regrets (available on Bandcamp) and don’t get to these parts much, so word to the wise! Dysfunctionals and Atlanta’s own Chickens and Pigs also on the bill.
We also have local guys the Wheelknockers at Tin Lizzy’s on Briarcliff doing a special early show on Saturday Oct 15, and Tammy’s Backyard Bandstand in Kennesaw is doing its swan song show with Chester Lethers featuring Nathan Nelson on the big porch along with special guests –also a special 6 pm start on Saturday Oct 15! Thank you Tammy, for bringing live music back in the dark days of Covid and putting some green in artists’ pockets –every penny of Backyard Bandstand ticket sales goes directly to the musicians! 7-Oct-2022 “Americana Garage” WRFG 89.3 FM Fridays 8-10 pm. Archive at www.wrfg.org Summer may have passed, but you can still grab a little slice at the Southern Surf Stomp Fest on Saturday Oct 8 from noon-10:30 pm at Little Tree Art Studios in Avondale Estates, GA! Surf music is a vital link in the rock timeline because it kept the electric guitar on the radio between the demise of rockabilly and the rise of the British Invasion. Today’s surf community is tight-knit and far-flung –this year’s Stomp lineup features combos from unlikely surf capitols like Dijorno, Italy (Surfer Joe), San Antonio, TX (Nuclear Juarez) Des Moines, Iowa (Surf Zombies) and many more including locals the Mystery? Men and the Surge! The Fest is free, but be generous with the tip bucket that is walked through the crowd between sets. And shout-outs to longtime Stomp organizer/MC Jet Powers, who also performs with local rockers the Wheelknockers.
Punkers THICK are at the Masquerade on Oct 10 and Judah and the Lion at the Coca-Cola Roxy on Oct 7. And the Oakhurst Porch Fest is also on Oct 8.

Yes, the rumor is true. Third Sunday of the month is this weekend, so I am hosting "My Own House" on 89.3FM/wrfg.org from 9am - 11am. "My Own House" is the eclectic music program that uses the umbrella term "Americana" to describe the music you'll hear, which can be anything from the genres of blues, bluegrass, alternative and classic country, singer-songwriter, roots, R & B, folk, western swing, rock (southern and otherwise), and whatever else we decide to throw in the mix.

As is typical, I will start off the show with brand new Americana music, some of it literally days old and some stretching back a few months. Then, we'll listen to some Americana artists that I recently heard here in the ATL live and in concert. Finally, my "Roots Of Americana" segment--which usually concentrates on music from the 50's through the 70's--will actually contain music from the mid 80's through the very early 90's as it was just before the period when "Americana" was the term used to describe the music.

As you prepare for church, or relax with a newspaper or tv show, or drink a cup of coffee or eat breakfast--tune us in every Sunday for a refreshing, eclectic sound you'll hear nowhere else but on WRFG 89.3 FM/WRFG.org. Also available via free downloadable iPhone or Android apps and at tunein.com.
