31-December-2021-“Americana Garage” WRFG 89.3 FM Fridays 8-10 pm. Archives at www.wrfg.org Welcome to the last night of the year-aka ‘Amateur Night’ aka ‘New Year’s Heave!’ In addition to our usual party songs and Holiday leftovers, we offer snippets from two legendary concerts from New Year’s Eves past.
First up is the Ramones from the It’s Alive album, recorded 12/31/1977 at the Rainbow in London, England. This is Ramones at their peak, ripping through 30 songs in an hour, pausing only to bitch about some bad takeout chicken!
Then we have the Band from Rock of Ages, recorded 12/31/1971 at the Academy o f Music in NYC. They have a full horn section along for the ride, and Dylan joins them for the finale.
And for a New Year’s show in real time, we welcome Nashville prog-metalurgists All Them Witches to Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse tonight!
On a sad note, we honor rockabilly cat, Ozzie and Harriet actor and country-rock pioneer Rick ‘Ricky’ Nelson who died 12/31/1985 when his plane caught fire in midair and crashed in Texas. It is rumored that the fire was caused by someone on-board freebasing co***ne. Ricky’s rockabilly group featured the brilliant James Burton on guitar.
And for New Year’s Day, head on down to Boggs Social and Supply in the West End where Ben Bostick, Ben Trickey and a sucession of local singer/songwriters will entertain from 1-6 pm -free collards and black-eyed peas with any drink purchase!

24-December-2021 “Americana Garage” Fridays 8-10 pm. WRFG 89.3 FM. Archives at www.wrfg.org 75% of the music played each week on Americana Garage is brand new, meaning released in the last few weeks, and we’ve spent most of December presenting all the great new Holiday music coming our way. But on Christmas Eve, as a treat for our listeners, we’re going into the vaults!
In the late 80s/early 90s, Flagpole (FP) music magazine out of Athens, GA released a series of Christmas cassettes, with proceed going to charitable causes. These featured the cream of the Athens/Atlanta indie music scenes of the time (Michael Stipe, Deacon Lunchbox, Opal Foxx Quartet, Kevn Kinney etc etc) doing Holiday originals and covers. The cassettes are almost impossible to find now, and the lone CD best -of comp is long out of print.
Highly experimental Atlanta label Perimeter Records (PR) also released a series of Christmas cassettes during the same period, but these were not available in retail format and only distributed to radio stations. Here you would find the PR house band My Evil Twin and assorted guests banging out odes to satanic Santas, sci-fi Christmas songs and twisted parodies ( ie:“Final Solution by Pere Ubu becomes “Christmas Solution”). Also near impossible to find.
But you know what? Thanks to local musician/writer/collector/archivist James Joyce and his crew, there is a site where you can not only listen to this rare stuff but download it - for free! Go to www.beyondfailure.blogspot.com and hunt for the Flagpole and Perimeter Christmas comps.
The centerpiece of our Christmas Eve buffet is a live mini- concert by Rosie Flores and her Riveters, recorded on 12/24/2009 in Zilver Park Austin. TX! Rosie has Christmas cred, having grown up on W. Mistletoe St. in San Antonio! This appears to be an extremely high-quality audience recording, and we thank our pal Brian S for providing!
The remainder of our program is filled out by various pop culture Holiday nuggets and rarities, and we did have one more brand new Holiday track make it in under the wire –a Christmas greeting from local soul legend William Bell!
Have a Hippiddy Happiddy Holiday-and to all a good night!

My turn to host "My Own House" this Sunday on WRFG 89.3 FM/wrfg.org. Since it is the day after Christmas, I'll be playing "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Winter Wonderland" for the umpteenth time.........SCRATCH THAT!!! If you believe that, I have some ocean front property in Arizona you might be interested in.....😄 Instead.....we will be playing handpicked selections of the most notable albums (in my judgment) in bluegrass, blues, alternative country, folk, singer/songwriter, rock, roots, and Western swing that were released in 2021. Give a listen and see if your favorite artist or album "made the cut" so to speak. My Own House - the Sunday Americana music show, 9am - 11am Eastern. Give us a listen this Sunday and EVERY Sunday for a great start to your day. And if you miss us the day of the show......wrfg.org and the "Archives" menu item will allow you to listen to past episodes of the show on demand.
