Journalists, please don't use generic videos or photos of Chinatown or Chinese people if doing reports on the coronavirus. The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is urging journalists to exercise care in their coverage of the coronavirus outbreak in China to ensure accurate and fair portrayals of Asians and Asian Americans and to avoid fueling xenophobia and racism that have already emerged since the outbreak. Here are recommendations for AAJA.

"I want a prominent media home that reflects our size and heterogeneity. I want stories about wealth as opposed to income inequality and its effect on intergenerational and social mobility. I want stories that aren’t just about our problems, but that are also told by, for, and with us. We are civic participants who matter. I want us to set the terms of debate."

Just a reminder to fellow photographers, journalists, and creatives, remember that it is never ok for someone to use your work without your consent, the work you create is your intellectual property and when someone steals it they are stealing from you and taking money out of your pocket. If it happens don’t let them guilt you, you are entitled to compensation and you have every right to and should confront them. Even if it is a picture of them, it is still your intellectual property. Don’t be intimidated or feel it is wrong to confront them and demand compensation or at the very least credit. Your work is your property. - Matthew Hatcher, photojournalist
