We get asked all the time, “What is Mastering?”

It’s not just making something louder.
Most people would look at a BEFORE and AFTER version side by side and say, “Oh… you just made it louder!”

Mastering is a series of critical decisions an audio engineer makes to improve and/or correct tonal balance (EQ), shape dynamic range, transient response, and sustain (Compression), maximize perceived loudness while maintaining appropriate peak levels (Limiting), and sometimes even enhance the spatial characteristics of a mix—its width, depth, and height (that’s where the voodoo comes in 😄).

Then there’s preparing your final deliverables for their intended formats—digital streaming, downloads, CDs, vinyl, or other physical media—but that’s a whole separate conversation.

So…
1️⃣ Can iZotope (or another plugin suite) “master” your music?
Maybe… but it still can’t get you all the way through the mastering and delivery pipeline.
2️⃣ Is iZotope (or any other AI-assisted mastering software) actually listening to your music and making the same experience-based decisions a mastering engineer makes for your specific song?
No.
They’re incredibly useful tools, but they’re still tools—not experienced ears.
