in the early 1900s you could buy tapeworm eggs as a weight loss pill from mainstream retailers. the tapeworm would hatch inside you and eat. the side effects included meningitis and organ failure because the tapeworms moved wherever they wanted inside your body. the removal procedure frequently choked patients to death. at the same time sears was selling arsenic wafers for clear skin. both were legal. no prescription required. the fda barely existed. some of this was less than 120 years ago.
