November Mother of the Bride 🍂I asked here before for advice on what to wear to a black-tie optional wedding, and it was suggested I go with a floor-length gown. The wedding is just over a week away in Westchester County, NY — ceremony at 1 PM in a church and reception at 5 PM.As the stepmother, I want to look elegant without taking any attention away from the mother of the bride, so I’m worried the beaded dress might be too sparkly. ✨ Another concern — I’m always cold, so I’ll need something to wear over a sleeveless gown. 🥶

I already know exactly how this debate goes whenever a woman wants to wear navy with a little drama: everybody says they want her to look elegant, and then the second she actually does, they start voting for the most watered-down option 🙃💦

A is gorgeous and regal, but some people are going to call it “too much” just because it has detail, sleeves, and an actual presence.
B is the one that really makes a statement, and I can already hear the pearl-clutching over the off-the-shoulder neckline like showing a shoulder at a formal event is suddenly reckless.
C is beautiful too, but let’s be honest… this is exactly the kind of dress people run to when they want to say “classy” but really mean “safe.”

That’s the part that gets me. Why are women always pushed toward the option that takes up the least space? Why does “age appropriate” so often translate to “please be elegant, but not so elegant that anyone notices”? Meanwhile a man can wear the same plain tux for the 400th time and somehow that’s timeless 😒

Personally, I think one of these looks rich, flattering, and unforgettable… and one is absolutely getting picked by people who are terrified of a grown woman serving even a little glamour at night ✨💙

So tell me the truth:
