When Love, Burnout, and Caregiving Collide
Caregiving rarely arrives with a warning, an instruction manual, or enough support. In this episode of Be Your Own Advocate with Isabel Dassinger and Isaiah Fliessbach, Andrea Chronister joins the conversation to discuss her experiences as both a nurse and caregiver—and introduces her plans to help other caregivers find information, resources, community, and a place where their experiences can be heard.
Andrea shares the complicated reality behind caring for someone you love. Beyond medications, appointments, insurance, and navigating the healthcare system, caregivers can face exhaustion, resentment, guilt, grief, and burnout. For Andrea, those challenges become even more complicated when she has to move between the roles of nurse, caregiver, mother, friend, and former spouse while helping care for the father of her child.
The conversation also looks toward what Andrea hopes to build: honest discussions with caregivers and advocates who can share practical knowledge and real experiences. From finding respite and navigating available resources to recognizing that caregivers must care for themselves, this is the beginning of a conversation designed to make an often invisible community feel a little less alone.
Episode Highlights
Caregiving is more than providing physical care. Andrea explains how the emotional and mental weight of caring for someone you love can make caregiving dramatically different from an ordinary job.
Knowledge can reduce some of the fear. Her nursing background allows Andrea to translate complicated medical information into language patients and families can understand—but she recognizes that most caregivers don't begin with that advantage.
Burnout and resentment need to be discussed. Andrea openly acknowledges that caregivers can love someone deeply while simultaneously feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or resentful. Those feelings can create guilt and make an already difficult situation even harder.
Resources matter for the caregiver, too. A major goal of Andrea's future conversations will be helping caregivers navigate systems, locate assistance, learn from other caregivers, and understand that caring for themselves is part of caring for someone else.
Quote
“If you are not caring for yourself and getting resourced in different ways, it's not going to work.”

Caregiving can feel isolating, but it doesn't have to be a journey you navigate without information, support, or community.
