I was raised in Opa-Locka, Florida, from kindergarten through high school. My grandmother was one of the first Black homeowners in the area, and she lived there until she passed in 2018. In 1997, I worked as the executive assistant to the Mayor of Opa-Locka, and even then, I saw firsthand the corruption and lack of integrity in leadership. I’m saddened that despite minimal growth, much of the city’s potential remains untapped due to failed promises, nepotism and ineffective leadership. Although, like many in my generation, I moved away. Opa-Locka will forever be my home. The roots run too deep and thick for it not to be. As does my fondest child and adulthood memories.
But as my father’s favorite Sam Cooke song says, “A Change Is Gonna Come.” And I truly believe it’s on the horizon.
With great honor, love, and support, I’m sharing this: My sister in Christ, spiritual mom, and dear friend is running for City Commissioner. She’s not a career politician, but she is a lifelong resident who embodies real, lasting change. I like to say, "From here. Still here."
There are no tricks, gimmicks, or hidden agendas with her—just a commitment to serve her community with integrity. For those who know her, you know she’s a disciple of Jesus Christ. And while this is a government role, we are reminded that the ultimate government rests on His shoulders.
Opa-Locka has had many leaders who failed to bring the change the people so desperately need and deserve. Perhaps it takes someone outside the political machine to finally bring the hope, progress, and transformation the city has been crying out for.
Change is coming. Let’s be part of it and open the door to Dr. Retevea Bain-Walden a new face and a fresh hope.
