I called my husband from labor, he snapped: 'handle it yourself, stop being so dramatic!' and left for his mom's birthday. 3 days later, he walked in and went completely white when he saw who was holding my son.
For three days, Rowan didn't check on me once. He assumed I was at home, nursing a bruised ego and tending to our newborn alone.
On Monday afternoon, the front door of our townhouse clicked open. Rowan strolled into the sunlit living room carrying a garment bag from an expensive boutique, humming to himself.
"Phoebe, I'm back," he called out casually, setting his keys on the entryway table. "Look, Mom said you can come over for dinner this weekend if you apologize for being so needy during her party—"
He froze.
Sitting on the plush velvet sofa, holding tiny Leo against his chest, was a man whose face had dominated every major business journal, national newspaper, and financial broadcast for the last twenty years.
Gideon Sterling.
Rowan’s jaw dropped. The boutique bag slipped from his fingers, hitting the floor. The color drained so fast from his face that he looked as though he might pass out right there on the rug.
"Mr.... Mr. Sterling?" Rowan stammered, his voice squeaking as he took an involuntary step back. "What... what are you doing in my house?"
"I'm holding my grandson, Rowan," Gideon said, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the quiet room like a bell. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
Rowan stared in utter bewilderment from Gideon to me. "Grandson...? Phoebe, what is this? Who is this man?!"
"He's my father, Rowan," I said, stepping out from the kitchen with a mug of tea, completely calm and unbothered. "The 'absent retired salesman' you and your mother spent two years mocking."
Rowan’s eyes darted frantically between us as the reality shattered his brain. "Your father is... Gideon Sterling? The chairman of Sterling Global Investments?"
"And you," Gideon added, looking up from little Leo with cold, surgical disdain, "are the coward who left my daughter in labor to go eat birthday cake."
Rowan swallowed hard, sweat suddenly glistening on his forehead. He tried to force a panicked, nervous smile. "Mr. Sterling, please! It was a misunderstanding! Phoebe didn't explain how urgent it was! My mother—"
"I told you my water broke," I interrupted quietly. "Your mother told you women have been giving birth for thousands of years, and you told me to call a cab."
"Phoebe, honey, I'm sorry!" Rowan pleaded, taking a step toward the couch. "I was just trying to keep the peace with my mom! You know how she gets! Let's talk about this privately—"
"There's nothing left to talk about privately, Rowan," I said, handing a crisp white envelope to my father's senior legal counsel, who had just walked through the front door behind two process servers.
"Rowan Vance," the attorney stated, stepping into his path. "You are hereby served with a petition for fault-based divorce, an emergency ex parte order for sole physical and legal custody of Leo, and a notice of immediate eviction from this property."
Rowan gasped. "Eviction?! This is my townhouse!"
"This townhouse," I corrected, "was purchased through a holding company fully funded by my mother's estate. And as a forensic accountant, Rowan, I spent the last three days while recovering from my C-section doing what I do best: following the money."
Rowan went completely still.
"I went through our joint declarations and your firm's secondary ledger," I continued, pulling up a digital file on my tablet. "I found the $180,000 you systematically embezzled from your business partners over the last eighteen months—including the funds you used to buy your mother that luxury watch and finance her birthday party."
Rowan stumbled back against the wall, his breathing ragged as pure horror took over. "Phoebe... no... please, don't do this..."
"My father's legal team has already forwarded the complete audit to your managing partners and the state prosecutor," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You wanted me to handle it myself. So, I did."
Just then, two uniformed police officers stepped into the foyer.
"Rowan Vance?" the lead officer called out. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and fraud."
Rowan wept and sputtered, begging for mercy as the officers pulled his hands behind his back and snapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. He was dragged out into the cul-de-sac in full view of the neighbors—his career destroyed, his reputation ruined, and his freedom stripped away.
When his mother, Selina, tried to call my phone an hour later in a frantic panic after hearing of her son's arrest, I simply blocked her number without answering.
Sitting beside my father in the quiet warmth of the living room, watching my healthy baby boy sleep peacefully in his grandfather's arms, I took a deep, clear breath—knowing that my son and I were finally safe, protected, and free.
