As the 2024-25 school year comes to a close, here’s a look back at the good, the bad and everything in between about the first year with Yondr pouches and the personal electronic device ban.

Graduation coach Susanna Roberts said the main purpose of Yondr was to cut phone usage in classrooms.

“Our phone usage in classrooms is almost none,” Roberts said. “That was our main goal, to get the phones out of classrooms, and also to promote relationships and talking to people in a face-to-face interaction. All of the things that we hope to accomplish this year have been amazingly successful.”

The boys track team finished its season with a second-place finish in Region 4-AAAA meet, followed by a 16th-place finish in the Class 4A state meet.

Head coach Del Ellerton said the team will build on its second-place region finish by attempting to restore its winning culture next season and beyond.

“We are reestablishing our identity,” Ellerton said. “I think just letting the athletes see success, because they have a disconnection from the success that we’ve had, goes a long way toward reestablishing a culture of what they’re capable of doing. Even finishing runner-up is a big step, and for the athletes coming back, it gives them a reference point of where they are, but more importantly, it shows them that they are capable of winning.”

Despite being found liable for sexual abuse by a jury and being a convicted felon on 34 counts, Donald Trump was elected president by both the electoral college and popular vote. He won the popular vote by more than 2 million votes and had over 77 million votes in total. The disregard of his history by millions of Americans undermines the seriousness of these abuses, making it substantially harder for victims across the country to stand up against their abuses.

Georgia representative Imani Barnes founded the non-profit organization Youth Policy Exchange (YPE) in April, 2025. Youth Policy Exchange gives students a platform to meet with Georgia lawmakers and provide input for new policies.

The program will begin in June following the end of the 2024-25 school year. The first meeting will take place on zoom. Afterward, based on student responses, policies will be drafted and presented to Georgia’s local and state legislation.

“I just started [Youth Policy Exchange] from sitting down with teenagers and hearing [their] ideas,” Barnes said. “There are adults drafting policies for teenagers, but we are not getting the teenagers point of view. So I started a non-profit [organization] so I can get [their] point of view on policies. We will draft policy over this summer and turn them in into elected officials, so we can better draft policy that fits you all.“

Ending the season 13-10 overall and 7-2 in Region 4-AAAA, the boys tennis team advanced to the state semifinal before losing 3-2 to Westminster.

“I think the team was pretty disappointed, especially the seniors, but we put up a good fight,” sophomore Jackson Severovich said of the May 13 loss. “I’m excited to play against them next year, though.”

The team beat Northview 3-0 on May 2, which was a significant moral booster for the team as it advanced in the tournament.

“The Northview win was a huge confidence builder, and everyone trained and played a lot to make sure we were prepared for our next match,” senior co-captain Jackson Barr said.

The Supreme Court’s approval rating has plummeted in recent years due to various decisions and actions by its members, resulting in a widespread call to reform the Supreme Court and its processes. However, creating an 18-year term limit on the justices and removing older justices from the Court is impractical, and would disrupt the fabric of our political system for years to come.

Recently, the Supreme Court has become more and more polarized, with fewer “moderate” justices than ever before. This has come with the growing trend of polarization in national politics as a whole. We may see a multitude of decisions reversed by a majority court of different political perspectives. Roe v. Wade has already displayed what could occur with many cases.

Established in 2014 by Emory University, the Georgia Tech and Atlanta Metro Science Chamber, the Atlanta Science Festival takes place annually every March and produces a series of science-based events. Specifically, a blend of STEM and comedy arises through science improv shows.

Improviser John Mihalik has been doing regular improv for 12 years after participating in his first stand-up comedy class.

“I found [improv] was a completely different thing than stand up comedy,” Mihalik said. “It was a different challenge, and it got me out of my comfort zone, and I love doing things that get me out of my comfort zone.”

The Knights finished the season with a 10-9 overall record and 3-2 region record, an improvement compared to the 5-13 record last season where the team fell short to Green Briar in the first round. While the playoff run wasn’t as far as the team hoped, head coach Andrew Sanders said he is proud with how far this team has come.

“We are so proud to have advanced in the playoffs this year, it’s an important milestone for our Midtown boys lacrosse program,” Sanders said. “Our regular season schedule was challenging this year, we faced five top-20 teams in the state and that helped build toughness, ending the regular season with a seven-game win streak, we were able to carry that momentum into a resounding first-round playoff win before falling to a very good Lovett team.”

A vacant lot on 14th Street in Midtown, that has sat empty for over 20 years, is now on a path to become an improved green space and public park, overriding former plans for a site to be the city’s tallest residential tower.

On March 18, the Midtown Improvement District (MID) a part of the Midtown Alliance announced plans to purchase the four acres of land, with aims of creating a public space in the heart of Midtown.

“For nearly 50 years, Midtown Alliance’s mission has been to create an exceptional urban place where people want to be,” Midtown Alliance Director of Marketing and Communications Brian Carr said. “Now, we are taking a big step forward and changing the trajectory of a disinvested property to make it something the city can be proud of.”

Over recent years, water bottles have become everyday fashion accessories, and it all has to do with the growing concern of single use plastics. Stainless steel, glass and luxury-branded options have flooded the market, proving a sustainable and stylish alternative to plastic bottles.

However, the increasing use of these reusable water bottles raises the question of whether we are honestly reducing our environmental impact or only altering our consumption habits. Since it requires energy and raw resources to create glass or stainless steel bottles, the overconsumption of new, “trendy” water bottles is hazardous for the environment, as making glass or stainless steel bottles uses a lot of energy and raw materials.

Georgia Senate Bill 74, sponsored by Republican Sen. Max Burns, aims to charge any public librarian with a crime that knowingly distributes explicit or harmful content to a minor.

This bill aims to amend Part 3 of Article 3 of Chapter 12 of Title 16 of the Official Code of Georgia, which discusses the distribution of explicit or harmful content to minors.

“As a parent, naturally, I would not want books that could be harmful distributed to my children,” director of Atlanta Public Schools (APS) library and media services Jennifer Saunders said. “The concern makes sense. However, the concerning part of the bill is who determines what materials are harmful. There are instances when books that reflect family structures different from my own are considered harmful. There are books that represent my culture as well as other non-white cultures that are banned and considered harmful.”
