By the time the lights went down, I’d talked myself all the way back into the fantasy.

Sitting there in my gown, waiting to see Lisa Knowles-Smith and The Brown Singers, his hand in mine, I let myself believe it was real. That we were fine. That he was who I wanted him to be.

For one night, I chose the fairytale over the truth. And the music was so good, I almost forgot everything I already knew.

Before all the glitz and the glam, I called Simone and told her what I couldn’t tell him. That something felt off. That I didn’t trust him.

She heard me out. And then I did what I always did. I hung up, looked at my grandmother’s picture, and got dressed for him anyway.

Knowing something’s wrong and staying anyway. That’s a special kind of tired.

He was showing me a whole new world. Fast car, city lights, money like it came from nowhere.

He dropped a stack in my lap like it was nothing. And for half a second I wondered where it came from. Then I decided I didn’t want to know.

We passed a church that night. I saw it light up in the window. And I turned my head the other way.

That was the night I stopped asking questions.

I was finally letting my guard down. Starting to believe this could be something real.

Then her name lit up his phone. And without missing a beat, he flipped it face-down and smiled at me like nothing happened.

I asked who it was. He said, “just work, nobody.” And I wanted to believe him so bad that I let it go.

Every warning was right there. I just wasn’t ready to see it.

For the first time in a long time, I felt happy. Guard all the way down. Safe.

Then he pulled me close and said it. “You know you’re beautiful, right?”

The exact words. Word for word. The thing my grandmother said to me every single morning of my life.

And just like that, the one voice that was supposed to be sacred was coming out of his mouth. I smiled and let it go. But something cracked.
