Not for Human Consumption - gutwrench.

Jon Sokol tells a Southern tale full of culture, chewing to***co and stubborn Southern men with lessons to learn.

By Jon Sokol Larry watched as his young friend squinted at an open can of tuna. “This product not for human consumption,” Deke read aloud. This Is How We Say I Love You - gutwrench.

Here's some "Pandemic Lit," to borrow from our friends at Write Club Atlanta -- wherein Cat Taylor reminds us of the ways to say, "I love you," and that in times of need, there's still Waffle House.

Daniel Lamb Benjamin Carr

By Cat Taylor Not-quite-yet hungover, sprawled on couches, beanbags, beds, pronounced like “drink some water,” and “we’ll go to Waffle House in the morning.” We’ve never stopped wearing our hearts on our sleeves still sewing them back on where our parents would have stuffed them in a dra...

Maddie Fay's latest poem is warm, beautiful and heartbreaking.

I once spent six months eating cold unseasoned green beans out of a can for almost every meal because suffering for suffering’s sake feels righteous when you believe that you deserve it. I once spent ten years pretending not to be a d**e for essentially the same reason.

Anthony Elmore reflects upon life as a day laborer in the latest piece for Issue Seven.

I put myself through college through a mix of student loans, petty theft, and temp jobs, back when that was actually possible. I worked as a dishwasher, a bricklayer, a fish cleaner, a flavored ice vendor, and a janitor, and that was in just in one week.

Still Life with Mason Jars - gutwrench.

Issue Seven continues with this excellent piece from Shannon M. Turner about how the things we try and preserve can turn bad.

In the final years of my parents’ marriage, they lived on a small farm. They canned a lot of delicious food, and for the rest of my life, my nose will recall the smell of fruits and vegetables in Mason jars cooking on a stove. I can close my eyes and see the beauty of all those jars, their gorgeou...
