It’s officially Small Business Month in Atlantic City!

Mayor Marty Small Sr. has proclaimed May as Small Business Month and we’re celebrating the amazing entrepreneurs, mom-and-pop shops, and local legends that make this city great. 🙌🏽

The City’s Department of Planning & Development just rolled out a series of programs and events to support and spotlight our small business community:

🛍️ “Keep it Local” Campaign
New colorful window signs (one for each ward!) will soon be popping up in local storefronts to remind everyone to Shop, Eat, and Explore Atlantic City.

🅿️ Free Parking Day – Saturday, May 17
Parking meters and kiosks (except beach blocks) won’t be enforced so it’s the perfect time to get out and support local businesses.

📚 Small Business Academy
Our free program that helps residents launch and grow their businesses is wrapping up its latest cohort—and tonight, participants are pitching their businesses at The Simpson Restaurant and Bar at 6 PM!

🏆 Business Recognition Awards
We’re honoring the businesses that go above and beyond for our community. Huge congratulations to this year’s award winners, including:
• Dock’s Oyster House
• Gilchrist
• Kelsey’s
• Miss Audrey’s Thrift Shop
• Tony Boloney’s / Mad Mutz
• And many more!

💬 “The small business community has been the fabric of Atlantic City’s economy since well before casinos arrived,” said Mayor Small. “We’re proud to celebrate them—not just this month, but all year long.”

👉 Know a business we should highlight? Tag them in the comments! Let’s show love to the people and places that help our city THRIVE.

From casinos to culture, Atlantic City is more than what meets the eye, thanks in large part to Ralph Hunter Sr., founder of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey.

For decades, Mr. Hunter has shown the world that Atlantic City is rich in Black history, culture, and pride. What began as a personal mission became a powerful institution preserving stories too often left untold.

He built a museum from the ground up and in doing so, opened minds and hearts across generations. His work proves that Atlantic City’s legacy runs far deeper than the Boardwalk.

We were proud to have featured Mr. Hunter on Great Day Atlantic City. Now, the NJ Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will honor him with the Spirit of Hospitality Award—and we can’t think of anyone more deserving.

Atlantic City is Getting Safer — Now It’s Time to Shift the Perception

Crime in Atlantic City is down more than 19% in 2025, and city leaders say it’s time the public catches up with the progress being made. While the numbers speak for themselves, changing outdated perceptions remains a top priority.

Thanks to the hard work of the Atlantic City Police Department () and their strong partnership with the City of Atlantic City, residents and visitors are already seeing the difference—more patrols, cleaner streets, new infrastructure, and safer neighborhoods.

🌆 The city is investing in safety—and it’s working. Now it’s time for the narrative to reflect the reality.

Thanks to $10.3M in newly released federal funding, the City is moving forward with the long-awaited revitalization of Atlantic Avenue — bringing fresh pavement, synchronized traffic signals, LED lighting, safer sidewalks, and more.

🏗️ Construction is expected to begin this summer and will transform one of Atlantic City’s most vital corridors into a safer, smarter, and more welcoming street for all.

🌟 Atlantic City Community Gem: Henrietta Shelton 🌟

This Black History Month, we celebrate Henrietta Shelton, the visionary founder of the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation, Inc., whose tireless work has preserved and uplifted African American history and culture in Atlantic City.

📖 Established in 1997 alongside her brother, the foundation honors the legacy of Missouri Avenue Beach, once the designated area for Black beachgoers during segregation. Shelton reclaimed the name Chicken Bone Beach—once a symbol of exclusion—and turned it into a powerful emblem of resilience, culture, and unity in Atlantic City.

🎷 Through the Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Institute, she has fostered the next generation of musicians, ensuring the legacy of jazz continues to thrive. The foundation’s beloved summer jazz concerts on the Boardwalk bring the community together, celebrating the soul of Atlantic City through music.

🏆 A true changemaker, Shelton’s impact has been recognized by the NAACP, the Atlantic County Women’s Hall of Fame, and the American Conference on Diversity, among others. Even after retiring from a 41-year career with the FAA Technical Center, she continues to educate, inspire, and unite the community through her foundation’s work.

🔹 Henrietta Shelton’s unwavering dedication ensures that African American history remains a vibrant and integral part of Atlantic City’s story.

🌟 Atlantic City Community Gem: Ralph Hunter, Sr. 🌟

This Black History Month, we honor Ralph Hunter, Sr., a true cultural steward and the founder of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey. His lifelong dedication to preserving and celebrating Black history has created a lasting impact on Atlantic City and beyond.

📖 From organizing artifacts for a renowned collector to building a collection of thousands of pieces, Hunter’s passion led to the creation of two permanent museum locations—ensuring that the rich and often underrepresented stories of African Americans in Atlantic City and Southern New Jersey are shared for generations.

🏛 His vision doesn’t stop here. With only 5% of his collection on display at any time, he dreams of a larger museum in Atlantic City—one that fully honors the African American legacy of the city, county, and region.

🔹 A leader, historian, and storyteller, Ralph Hunter, Sr. is not just preserving history—he’s shaping the future of cultural awareness in Atlantic City.
