We're in the middle of our open reading period for literary translations and new plays!

For our literary translation series, we welcome volumes of poetry, collections of short fiction, and completed novels in translation from both emerging and established translators.

For our drama series, which celebrates innovative storytelling in dramatic writing, we are keen to see submissions of finished full-length plays and particularly welcome submissions from emerging playwrights.

Ever notice how history keeps handing out trophies to the same five guys, like women never owned pens?

They’ll build statues for a man who wrote one speech, but forget the woman who wrote freedom into existence while cooking dinner.

That woman? Her name was Maria Firmina dos Reis.

In 1859 Brazil, when women weren’t supposed to have opinions—let alone publish them—she dropped Úrsula, the first abolitionist novel written by a Black woman in Brazil.

No sponsors.
No fancy salon crowd.
Just pure courage, ink, and purpose.

She didn’t write to be famous. She wrote because silence was a luxury her people could not afford.

Maria’s pen wasn’t a decoration.
It was defiance.
And while others were busy polishing chains, she was breaking them, word by word.

A Tree of My Own was a notable 2025 winner of one Gold and two Silver IBPA Book Awards, a premier effort from first-time author Nui Wilson as well as new publisher Frances Lu-Pai Ippolito of Qilin Press.
Since 1985, IBPA has been honoring excellence in independent publishing, and we are now open for submissions for books and audiobooks published in 2025. All independent publishers, hybrid publishers, author publishers, university presses and association presses are eligible. With over 60 categories, including recognition in AAPI, Black, African American, Disabled, First Nations and Indigenous, Latina/o/e, LGBTQIA2+ and Neurodivergent communities.
