Several people have inquired recently about self-publishing. Why self-publish instead of working with an established distribution channel is a common question. The truth is that I do not want to relinquish control over my creative product. It's really hard work--self-publishing means you write, hire editors, perform marketing functions and deal with misprints (yep. it happens). Yes, you can hire freelancers or others to help you. But at the end of the day...you have COMPLETE control over the finished product.

Reading is fundamental. But other activities can also support learning. Here are five fun things to do at home to support child development: 1. Try hands-on learning activities like puzzles or building with blocks. Putting things together helps children learn problem-solving. 2. Do some easy craft projects. Tactile learning activities help children understand the physical world. 3. Let children write their own story. If they don't know how to write yet, you can write it for them. They learn how to explain events in order and think creatively. 4. Go outside on a nature walk. Let children explore nature. Observe what captures their interest, and you can build "lessons" off of that. Do they love catching bugs? Plan a lesson on bumblebees. This child-centered approach keeps kids engaged. 5. Plant a small garden. Kids can learn self-sufficiency and about healthy eating habits--without you forcing the issue. Learning should include core competencies like reading and math. But it need not be boring! These activities can spark curiosity and will foster lifelong learning.

A word about the Rocco the Brave Toy Fox Terrier Tales

Years after writing the first Rocco stories in a spiral notebook, I finally decided to bring the series to life.

My husband encouraged me to do this for the past several years. I work full-time as a freelance writer and editor, but I primarily “ghostwrite” for other authors. I finally decided to step out and publish my children’s stories.

I wrote the first book about Rocco (yes, he is a real toy fox terrier) when my stepdaughter, Jessica, was very young. That first story was about coping with bullies. Rocco used courage to defeat the bullies and stand up for himself.

Thinking about it, there are so many skills children don’t learn in school any longer--writing in cursive and reading a map spring to mind. But there are other, more important tools children need for success--and those abstract concepts are more challenging for parents and teachers to demonstrate today. Principles like kindness, courage, cooperation seem to be disappearing.
