Naturally preserved mummy from the Nasca culture of Peru, dating approximately between 100 BCE and 800 CE, was found in the arid coastal desert near Ica with remarkably well preserved long red hair still tied with fabric ribbons.
The remains came from the Chauchilla Cemetery, a burial ground in one of the driest deserts on Earth. The extreme aridity, combined with the saline soil, naturally desiccated bodies without the need for artificial embalming. Skin, hair, and even some soft tissue remained intact for nearly 2,000 years. While originally buried deep in pits to protect the dead, many of these mummies were exposed in the last century due to looting. Grave robbers tore through ancient graves, scattering bones and textiles, leaving the dead to bleach under the desert sun.
The Nasca culture is famous for the sprawling geoglyphs known as the Nasca Lines, but their burial practices were equally sophisticated. The dead were wrapped in cotton textiles, seated in woven baskets, and placed in shallow tombs lined with mud bricks. Offerings of pottery, food, and sometimes trophy heads accompanied them to the afterlife. The long red hair tied with ribbons suggests this individual held a particular status or belonged to a specific family lineage. Hair does not decay easily in the desert. It holds its color, its tie, its story.
The lasting impact of these naturally preserved remains is a mixture of wonder and grief. Wonder because the desert has gifted modern researchers with an intimate view of Nasca life: hairstyles, clothing, even the contents of stomachs. Grief because looting has destroyed countless graves, ripping context away from the dead. A mummy without its tomb, without its offerings, without its burial position, tells only half a story. The red hair survived 2,000 years. The looters took only a few hours to steal the rest.
