Arminius, a Germanic prince taken hostage by Rome as a boy, was raised, trained, and trusted as a Roman officer. In 9 AD, he served as guide to General Varus and three full legions β nearly 20,000 men β deep into Germanic territory. He led them directly into an ambush in the Teutoburg Forest, where Germanic warriors waited. Over three days, the legions were slaughtered. Emperor Augustus reportedly wandered his palace crying "Give me back my legions." Rome never again attempted full conquest of Germania. π€
