The Waco Suspension Bridge opened in 1870 as the first bridge to cross the Brazos River, once a toll crossing on the Chisholm Trail itself.

Cattle drivers paid a nickel a head to cross here, and the bridge still stands as a walkable Waco landmark today.

Long before highways, a network of trails called El Camino Real de los Tejas connected Texas to Mexico.

Spanish missionaries and soldiers carved these routes in the 1690s, linking missions from the Rio Grande all the way to Louisiana. For over two centuries it carried settlers, traders, and soldiers deeper into Texas.

Many modern highways still follow this original path. 🛣️

In August 1840, one of the largest Comanche raids in Texas history ended in a decisive battle near modern-day Lockhart.

Hundreds of Comanche warriors had burned the town of Linnville on the coast. Texas militia and Rangers intercepted the raiding party as it retreated near Plum Creek, scattering the force and recovering much of the stolen goods.

One of the largest battles ever fought on Texas soil. ⚔️

On March 2, 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico — a date every Texan should know.

The declaration set the stage for the fight that followed weeks later at San Jacinto, forever changing the region's history.

In the 1850s, the U.S. Army brought camels to Texas, believing they could conquer the desert better than horses.

Camp Verde, southwest of San Antonio, became home to over 70 camels shipped in from the Middle East. They proved remarkably suited to the terrain, but soldiers struggled to handle the unfamiliar animals. The Civil War ended the experiment, and sightings of escaped camels persisted for decades.

In the 1840s, East Texas descended into one of the strangest range wars in American history.

Land disputes and forged titles in Shelby County sparked deep distrust among settlers. A vigilante group called the Regulators formed to punish suspected criminals without trial — and the Moderators rose up to stop them. The feud spiraled into years of ambushes and gunfights.

Sam Houston himself had to send troops to end it. ⚔️
