🇵🇸 📍New York City, Sep 26, 2025 ― Colombian President Gustavo Petro joined a massive pro-Palestine and anti-genocide protest in New York’s Times Square on Friday. He appeared alongside Colombian academic Víctor de Currea-Lugo and Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters.
Speaking to the protesters, Petro declared: “We have to answer in the streets. We have to answer with the words. And we have to answer with the weapons. That’s why we need to create an army, bigger than the army of Israel or the army of the USA.”
Petro stressed that his call was not against Jewish or Israeli people. “Many of them are our friends,” he said. He recalled that his former group, the M-19 guerrilla movement in Colombia, trained with the Palestine Liberation Organization and stood in solidarity with the Polisario Front.
Petro said Colombia has already proposed a resolution at the United Nations to form a world army. He argued that such a force should begin its mission by liberating Gaza. “We proposed to create under the mandate of the UN a world army to liberate the world, and the first thing should be to liberate Gaza,” Petro told the crowd.
In his earlier address to the UN General Assembly, Petro had urged nations that reject genocide to unite in military defense of Palestinians. “We need a powerful army of the countries that do not accept genocide,” he said. “I invite the armies of Asia, the great Slavic people who defeated Hi**er with great heroism, and the Latin American armies of Bolívar. We must liberate Palestine.”

“Liberty or Death”
Petro framed his message in historic terms. “We’ve had enough words. It’s time for Bolívar’s sword of liberty or death,” he said. He warned that global powers are not only bombing Gaza but also threatening the Caribbean and other parts of the world.
The president stated that Washington and NATO are killing democracy and reviving tyranny on a global scale. He urged nations to raise the black and red flag of resistance alongside the white flag of peace. “It is the color of peace and hope for life on earth and in the heart of humanity,” he said.
Petro’s demand echoed remarks by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who recently said his country was ready to contribute 20,000 soldiers to a potential international armed force for Gaza.
During Petro’s UN speech, the United States delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall. Observers saw the move as a protest against his criticism of US President Donald Trump and NATO policies.
