My Krav Story and Why sometimes itโs better to not fight back
So Ive been doing some really deep reflecting as I sit here in hospital.
My names Cameron, Im 17 and have been doing Krav for 1 and a half years. Im at P2 level at the time of writing. Im a relatively big guy for my age and have full confidence in defending myself in situations.
This situation however, is one I never would have thought I would experience. I was at a public party, which although I knew was sketchy, thought would be fine. For the first 5 hours of the night everything was great. Was having a good time, mingling with chicks, had my mates around me etc. when it hit around 1130 however i was told there was a group looking to start trouble, thought nothing of it and moved on. Around 10 minutes later though, some guy starts on me by saying โyou all good g, you all good?โ He looked really aggressive so i defaulted to semi passive stance ready to counter. That said, i was standing near a fire pit and 2 seconds after i was pushed hard by someone i didnt see, narrowly avoiding the fire pit and burns.
This started a chain reaction and 2 guys started grabbing my shirt. I got the off me (at the expense of half my shirt) and was face to face with a guy with a broken glass bottle swinging at me. My Krav brain immediately told me to push kick him away and get out of the danger zone.
My street brain however I think, on much reflection saved me from worse injury than i already copped. As I was thinking of the push kick I noticed around 6 guys strafing around me, looking for any justification to pounce. If i had of pushed kicked the guy, before my mates would have been able to rush in i would have absolutely copped it. Keep in mind this was a dark uneven field, my knuckle was already degloved and I was being surrounded. In the end I had to receive plastic surgery for my lip which is now permanently scarred, my knuckle which i now need intense physiotherapy for and my back which needed 32 stitches.
Itโs really s**t and I cant do anything physical for the next 3 months. Although I was confused at first as to why my Krav Techniques didnt solve the problem, I realised there are just some situations where you are extremely unlucky and can only really minimise the damage. That was one of them.
