EXCLUSIVE: An elderly couple traveling back to Austin from Monterrey came face to face with criminals posing as Police the city of Nuevo Laredo in Taumalipas earlier this week.

They initially pulled over after an unmarked car got behind them and turned their police lights on nearing the Nuevo Laredo International Bridge.

The woman pointed out to her husband that they did not look like actual police men, but her husband pulled over anyway.

A man then walked up to the car and starting asking questions like where they were from and where they were going. They explained to him that they were traveling back to Austin from Monterrey.

The man posing as a police officer then told then leaned into the car and said "You have to pay around here" and demanded the drivers wallet. The driver then refused to give up his credentials and that's when the posing officer punched him in the face and said "Im gonna get a hold of my commander right now".

The husband then threw $2000 pesos (about $100 U.S. dollars) out the window, and when the man reached down pick up the money, he then took the opportunity to drive off.

The man posing as an officer had parked a good distance from the car, so it took him time to get back into his vehicle.

By the time the man got back into the unmarked car, they were able to speed off and merge in with surrounding traffic.

As of May 2025, there is an active travel ban for people traveling to Mexico. We would like to share this story to spread awareness about the dangers of driving into Mexico.

If you or someone you know is traveling down there, please let them know that if they get pulled over and the vehicle does not look like legitimate police officers, the best thing to do is to keep driving until you reach a safe spot like a business or somewhere where you are not isolated.

Safe travels everyone.

Beginning on Sept. 1, a new Texas law will ban students from using cellphones and other personal communication devices during school hours.

Gov. Abbott signed HB 1481 into law on Sunday. It requires school district policy to either ban personal devices from campuses entirely or mandate students to lock them away. The law also mandates that districts apply disciplinary action to violators, including the confiscation of devices.

Schools must either prohibit the devices on campus or provide secure storage for them, with punishments for violations.

Local school districts will be working over the summer to come up with a plan for implementing the new law.

Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed Senate Bill 3 on June 22, 2025, a shocking move that saves the state’s booming h**p industry and kills one of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s top priorities.

This bill (if had been approved) would have banned all consumable h**p products containing THC—including popular items like delta‑8 edibles, vapes, gummies and full‑spectrum CBD goods.

The governor issued the veto less than an hour before the deadline late Sunday night and did not immediately issue a statement.
