The event is often only the beginning.
The real conflict grows in the gap afterward.
What happened:
They made plans without me.
What I assumed:
They did not want me there.
What happened:
Someone did not respond.
What I assumed:
They don't care.
Sometimes our assumption is correct.
But when we treat an assumption as a proven fact, we enter the conversation ready to prosecute instead of ready to understand.
Communication sounds different when we begin with curiosity:
“I may be reading this wrong, but here is how it felt to me.”
That sentence leaves room for your truth and theirs.
You do not have to silence yourself to communicate well. You only have to leave enough room to learn something.
Yeah, me too. Let’s do this.
