"CHOOSE JOY!" Despite all of the topics of oppression and injustices big and small I share, I still go to work everyday happy. At the end of the day, the day will end and what is always front and center is the joy of teaching and making music.
Which is why I protect it and my peace at all costs.

I really wanted to play saxophone. But like many of my black women friends we were not allowed to play “boy instruments”. It is no coincidence that the majority of black women band directors are clarinet players. But God waists nothing. Playing clarinet first has made picking up every other woodwind that much easier. 🐻💙🧡 .williams3

The hardest thing to do is getting students to go beyond the black and white. Musicality has to be introduced from the start. Articulation, phrasing, dynamics, foreground vs background and seniority of sound have to be taught. Fight for it in the beginning so you don’t have to miss it in the end. # .williams3
