Great piece from CNBC highlighting our Trash Wheels and the important work they do!

"While there's lots of public awareness regarding the massive garbage patches in our oceans, we tend to hear less about how it all ended up there. Every year, it’s estimated that up to 2.97 million tons of plastic enters the ocean through rivers. And about 1,000 hyper-polluting rives are responsible for nearly 80% of that.

While the ultimate solution to the waste problem undeniably depends on some combination of better waste infrastructure, more sustainable packaging, less consumption, and public awareness around proper disposal, in the meantime there’s a host of companies developing some pretty neat systems to capture wayward trash from rivers. I got to speak with three of them for this video.

Thanks to John Kellett, inventor of Baltimore's famous Mr. Trash Wheel, Sandra (Sandy) Watemberg of Marea Verde, Boyan Slat of The Ocean Cleanup, and D.C. Sekhar of AlphaMERS Ltd for speaking with me about their innovative river cleanup devices, and Silpa Kaza from the The World Bank and Tim van Emmerik of Wageningen University & Research for the expert analysis.

Watch the vid to hear from all these smart folks!"

"Sporting a gaping maw of a mouth, he's winning hearts and minds by improving the prized waterfront of Maryland's largest city. And by stopping trash before it can empty into the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, he's making a difference far from the city limits."

Trash interceptors are becoming more common in large cities, helping to stop garbage as it floats down waterways. Mr. Trash Wheel is the pride of Baltimore, helping to make a cleaner, more beautiful city waterfront.

"Gwynnda is Baltimore’s largest trash wheel, capable of collecting approximately 300 tons of trash and debris from the Gwynns Falls each year — more than the consumption of the other three trash wheels combined."

The city of Baltimore is taking on the problem of ocean plastics in a unique way -- mechanical trash-eating monsters. Mr. Trash Wheel, was installed in 2014 and removed over 1,000,000 pounds of trash from the harbor in its first few years of existence. Since then, more have been installed and the id...
