Maila Nurmi (1922–2008) was a Finnish-American actress, artist, and model best known for creating the groundbreaking horror-host persona Vampira. Inspired by Charles Addams’ darkly glamorous cartoons, she crafted Vampira as a satire of Hollywood’s beauty standards—mixing gothic elegance, razor-sharp humor, and a shocking, wasp-waisted silhouette. In 1954, The Vampira Show debuted on Los Angeles television, making her the first true horror host in TV history. Her character instantly became a cultural sensation, influencing the look of goth culture, punk aesthetics, and countless horror icons who followed.

Outside of her brief but iconic TV fame, Nurmi lived a life marked by creativity, independence, and struggle. She appeared in films such as Plan 9 from Outer Space, worked as an artist and crafts person, and fiercely fought to protect her creative legacy—most famously during the legal disputes over the similarities between Vampira and Elvira. Although her mainstream career never reached the heights she deserved, Maila Nurmi’s influence has only grown with time. Today she is celebrated as a trailblazing outsider artist, a gothic pioneer, and one of the most important figures in horror pop culture.
