Art AND: Evan Woodard - BmoreArt

Evan Woodard knows his sh*t. A Washington, DC, native, historian, and board member of the Baltimore Antique Bottle Club, Woodard is interested in the history of the objects he and his friends find in the Baltimore privies they dig up. Baltimore, a city established well before indoor plumbing, has a density of pre-Civil-War-era working-class houses. Many have small backyards where, in a back corner farthest from the building, a person armed mostly with hardware-store equipment can uncover a portal that leads directly to the literal refuse of the past.

“Baltimore was one of the largest American cities during the 1800s, and it was also the furthest in-land deep water port in America (I believe it still is). This meant this was a booming city and had people from all walks of life moving through the city. So many of the items they brought with them or used are still buried under our city in privies and dumps.”

Happy National Dog Day!!! Flashback to our photo series of loveable studio pets by @jfannonphoto for BmoreArt’s Issue 12 which inspired our first ever dog calendar for this year designed by @suzykopf !

Background: National Dog Day was first established in 2004 by pet & family lifestyle advocate Colleen Paige.

The aim of promoting this day is to raise awareness about adopting these animals who are currently in rescue centers.

In addition, on this day promote dog ownership of all breeds, pure and mix. Embrace National Dog Day as an opportunity for all dogs to live a safe, happy and abuse-free life.

Throughout her life, Jordan Tierney has been collecting. She still has her childhood rock collection in her house, and her grandfather’s tackle box in her studio. The objects Tierney employs trigger memories and personal associations, but they also represent systems, histories, industries and labor, and the environmental impact of it all. Whether she’s thinking through the harmful ways humans live in the world, the dogged strength of nature, or the drastic act of survival, she selects each component purposefully for its metaphoric potential.

Informing each artist’s practice is the notion of building, both as material construction and conceptual layering. Placed in dialogue, the artists and their work revive retro aesthetics to look forward towards a harmonious union of fine art, architecture, and design.

“This strained, surreal, tragic-yet-impassioned relationship with love thematically underscores much of the work in Toor’s show, which focuses on how love—through the lens of a queer man from a Muslim cultural background—shapeshifts within the contexts of family, friends, sexual desire, and self-identity.”

Monarchy, 2020, by Taha Heydari at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Taha Heydari (b. 1986, Tehran, Iran) Monarchy, 2020. A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Heydari draws from the covers of the Iranian women’s magazine Zan-e Rooz (Woman of Today), published before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, to examine the ways in which media representations and cultural ruptures generate ideology and cascading trauma. For Monarchy, he has recreated a photograph of the Shah and royal Pahlavi family as a normal middle-class family through a myriad of web-like and impasto painting techniques.

“I used to think that being a successful (exhibiting) artist meant having gallery representation, living sustainably from selling my work, and having my work collected by museums. These are still important goals to me, but success has evolved to be very much about whether my work moves people.”

In Yam Chew Oh’s Mount Vernon studio overlooking Baltimore’s Symphony Hall, we talked about the fickle nature of creativity, the challenge and excitement of working with college students, and how we try every day to be the people our dogs think we are.

Are all creative people collectors? Why does the label of “collector” in Baltimore make people uncomfortable? What would Baltimore’s creative community look like if all those who participate actively collected locally, even at a modest level?

BmoreArt’s Issue 13 considers the act of collecting as a source of inspiration for artists, a community supporting economic practice, and a method for meaningful engagement in the world. Featured artists include Brandon Donahue, Linda Franklin, Deyane Moses, Jordan Tierney, the Baltimore Jewelry Center, and the DoMa Gallery.

“I chose these objects based on my cultural affiliation to them, the spiritual essence they exude, and the aesthetics of their forms. I believe our identities are the sum of our past and present memories informed by traditions and genetics. As I study the aesthetics of these objects, these portraits are perhaps a search for the essence of ourselves.” - Victor Ekpuk

I Am My Ancestor’s Essence: A Solo Exhibition by @victorekpuk at @aicongallery NY, up through August 27, 2022

“Aicon is proud to present I am My Ancestor’s Essence, the gallery’s second solo exhibition of Nigerian-American artist Victor Ekpuk. The show, a series of portraits in contemporary dialogue with African ancestral objects, comprises three distinct bodies of work: canvases that incorporate thick impasto paint layering, a suite of drawings that offer early examples of the artist’s mark-making, and ambitious large-scale totemic sculptures. Through I am My Ancestor’s Essence, the artist locates the past in the present by contemporizing sacred objects.”

Studio views of "Lotusflower" in progress, to be worn by Paula Salguero @salgueropaula This dress evolved so much from beginning to end. This was early in its becoming, this moment memorialied in these photos. Kevlar is the underlayer of this dress, with delicate, diaphonous layers on top. I incorporated 3 previous sculptures into this piece. At the base of the dress is a repurposed sculpture ("Coil", 2020). I made its root-like structure out of raw alpaca fiber, steel wire, tulle, rope, and thread. Paula and her story inspired me to open myself to the process, the materials, and the organic form of this piece as it unfolded before me. "Ex-tend Ex-cess: Metamorphosis in Clay," an exhibition of contemporary abstraction through the medium of clay. This exhibition of contemporary process-based sculpture and installation concentrates on abstraction as an extension of the artist's physical actions. By bringing together abstraction, frequently considered elitist and incomprehensible, and craft, often viewed as popular but lacking intellectual depth, the exhibition makes challenging work accessible and offers dialog around issues of equity in terms of materials and culture. Annie Broderick debuts a new collection of wearable art – in Kevlar. Bulletproof when layered, Kevlar is the fabric used in modern-day body armor. Kevlar is Annie's favorite material metaphor for feminine inner power: it is both delicate – a needle easily pierces through it for sewing – and strong (5x stronger than steel!), protecting the wearer against a bullet. Each wearable piece was hand-sewn to express the rich and varied story of womanpower. The collection is a celebration of 12 chosen women whose personal stories inspired Annie to create feminine armor layered with meaning. These women will wear their Kevlar couture for a one-night-only live showcase at Long View Gallery in late July. Please follow for an intimate look at the process of creating this collection and connecting with the warrior women in this project. Thank you for supporting our social launch of Miss Lou!
