The first dance is obviously one of the key moments in a wedding day. The Dj introduces the couple into the reception as husband and wife and then straight to the dance you go (most cases anyway). Typically the dance is going to be a usual slow dance of swaying back and forth, while guest snap pictures and video. While this is perfectly fine, I want to throw in another option of taking a dance class and really hit that dance floor on your First Dance. Taking a dance class before your wedding gives you and your significant other some time together to do something fun away from the usual planning. It will give you confidence when you get out there in front of everyone, and you can play around with routine you want for your dance which will add something fresh to your wedding for you to look forward to. Now, this is not for everyone, but if you are committed to adding some spice to the wedding, learning a new two step could be just the thing!

We talked about having fun the other week, and I guess this is a little extension of that, but I really want to encourage not forgetting to put your personality in the wedding day. What do I mean by that? Well, we all know when we are planning, we are going to hit those Pinterest pages hard, watch all the wedding shows on TLC, and stalk The Knot. These are all good things and VERY helpful, but I remember pulling so many ideas from all these other people that I forgot to include ME or I should say US. I have seen weddings with full on desert bars made entirely by the bride, Beauty and Beast centerpieces, Harry Potter decor, groomsmen wearing Jordans and Star Wars theme music. This reminded me that we should remember to include a little of what we like and love on a day that can be very traditional. I mean it is YOUR day! So, have fun with it... Part 2 I guess.

I recently filmed a wedding for a couple where they did something I had never seen before. They had a private dinner in a separate room from their guest. I thought this was unusual until I got a glimpse of them and saw the way they were able to talk with one another and soak in much of the day together in peace. Typically when the bride and groom are eating with everyone they are subject to the continual sound of forks assaulting glass queing a kiss, or wedding guest coming up to share their love and take a few selfies. This couple was able to skip some of that for the time being to eat (you will be very hungry by dinner) and enjoy some time together on a day where you are rarely alone. Right after dinner they crept back into the reception room, mingled with guest, and partied! This may not be for everyone, but if you value a little private time during the wedding day, this is the perfect addition to the day.

This seems like an odd or maybe obvious thing to say as a wedding itself is filled with all the ingredients for a fun evening, yet so many couples can miss out. From the start of the day you are trying to deal with managing multiple people in the wedding party, managing time, and trying to ensure the countless hours spent planning over numerous months weren't for nothing. While this is understandable, you can also see how it can keep you distracted from actually enjoying the greatest day of their life.

1. Utilize your loved ones or hired vendors as much as possible to keep the stress away from you.

2. Don't sweat the small stuff! Nothing ever goes as planned, so don't let it get to you if the officiant forgets your name (yes, it happens) or if the Dj can't get the equipment working (yes, it happens- thank God for streaming services).

3. Do not be concerned with everyone else. So, this is huge for many of us as we plan our weddings and we are super concerned about what others will think and say about our event, but remember this is about you and your significant other. All these people have come out to see you and share your joy.

Party and enjoy this special moment. It is the longest-shortest day of your life, so HAVE FUN!!

When you watch movies almost every wedding has some personal vows being exchanged, but in real life a lot of couples skip this. Here is why I believe any couple should consider writing vows.

1. Often in relationships we don't take the time to think out all of how we feel about someone and relay that back them. Here is a perfect opportunity to tell your soon to be spouse just how much you value them, recall what led you to this moment and what you are looking forward to.

2. Many people (including myself) are shy and are concerned about what others might think of their vows, but just know you don't have to say them in front of everyone. Write a letter to send before the wedding to your bride or groom, or say them during a first look.

Lastly, personal vows can MAKE wedding videos. They help tell the story of the couple and can really make the film so personal and take you back to those moments every time you watch.

So, this is totally for the benefit of your media vendors. Many times when brides are getting their makeup done, they will be set up in the middle of the room with all the lights on and typically a ring light in front for the makeup artist. Now don't get me wrong, I love me a good ring light shot every now and then, but nothing compares to those beautiful shots you get near a window with natural light beaming in. No need to bore with photography lingo, but just know many of those beautiful photographs you've noticed on your way to picking a photographer was probably near some good natural light. It is my suggestion that when you get into a room to start getting prepped make sure you move near a window. If you don't that is fine as well. I will ask once I get there!

Ok, before I get burned at the stake for bucking tradition let me just say "First Looks" are definitely becoming the norm. While they are not necessary, I am noticing more and more couples opting to see their loved one right before saying "I do." I fully support the movement and here's why. the First Look is a chance for each of you to get some special alone time (which is scarce on wedding day) to soak it all in together. You can take the time to see the beautiful dress and the tuxes, talk a little about the busy morning and share the joy and excitement for what is to come. In addition this makes for GREAT photo ops! There is something special about capturing a first look when there is just the bride and groom. As I said, this isn't for everyone, but I am totally on board for all that want to do the "First Look".

As you may know, venues can be the most costly aspect of a wedding and is by far one of, if not the most important part. There is a way to save hundreds (maybe thousands) on venues by the day you select for your wedding. Most weddings are held on Saturdays in the evening and trust me, venues are well aware of that demand which in turn means higher prices for you. Many venues offer lower package pricing for weddings that take place during the week/and or day time. Of course there is a fear of people not showing up or not being able to come because it is during the week. You can take it from me, that is not the case. My wife and I were married at a typically costly venue in downtown Baltimore, but because we got married on a Thursday at noon we paid less than half of what it would have been on a Saturday. We invited 100 guest and guess what... EVERY ONE of them showed up. In fact we had more people asking us to come that we couldn't fit on our list! Marriage is a special occasion and most of us are looking for a day to take off anyway! So, when you go to your next venue meeting make sure to find out about the weekday rates.

I have come across many couples that opt out of having a wedding planner and if you are engaged and thinking of doing the same, I would advise against it. Wedding planners are SO beneficial for the following reasons:

ORGANIZATION: It is a Planners job to ensure everything is going to plan, all things are working together to make the day the best ever. They schedule timelines for the venue and vendors. Speaking of...

VENDORS: Wedding Planners tend to work with many vendors and could make recommendations for you that keeps you from worrying about one less thing. They may be able to get you a discount as well.

STRESS: Planning a wedding in general can be stressful, and their job is to take that stress away from you as much as possible with their experiences and resources. Many times you can place your wedding vision in their hands and let them do some of the hard lifting before and during the actual wedding.

Having a wedding planner may not be possible for everyone depending on circumstance, but I always advocate for one. Your other vendors will be pleased as well.

GREAT QUESTION: I was recently asked WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE TO BOOKING WITH A PREFERRED VENDOR? I realize that many whom are getting married may be approached with this as wedding vendors tend to make connections and relationships and refer others out of admiration of the work they have seen. A big referral relationship is often found in Photographers and Videographers. While two studios may have mutual admiration for each other's work there are advantages to the relationship, both for the client and vendors. Communication is key in any relationship, but especially in a working relationship. When we work in our daily lives often we are working alongside others, and will find ourselves most productive on teams in which we know how to communicate effectively with those around us. Weddings are no different. Videographers and Photographers are essentially competing for the same content at the same time when in most parts of the day there can be no room for error. Communication could not be more important. Therefore, when Photographers or Videographers come across those they communicate well with and are able to produce quality images and/or films without negative impact referrals typically follow. The advantage to the client being quality products from the vendors, but mostly it is monetary as typically a discount system may be put forward if the client chooses to work with a preferred vendor. Weddings are costly (on average $30k), so any relief to cost is typically welcomed.
