The Baton Rouge Area Association of Black Journalists (BRAABJ) is saddened to learn of the passing of Donna Britt, longtime WAFB anchor and Louisiana Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductee, after her courageous battle with ALS.

Donna was the heart and soul of the greater Baton Rouge community; often leading viewers through historic, dark days and difficult moments with her bright warmth and compassionate heart. No matter the news of the day, year or decade, Donna had the ability to make you feel like everything was always going to be okay.

Off the desk, Donna was a trusted friend, colleague and mentor; including to many current and former members of BRAABJ. She understood the importance of diverse voices in media and helped to amplify our voices and stories in the community. She cared deeply about young journalists and worked to help them succeed, often following up with them long after their time at WAFB Channel 9.

More than the many achievements, awards and recognition for her journalistic poise and professionalism, Donna’s love for this community was unmatched. She was a true community servant.

Our hearts are with those mourning the loss of such a tremendous voice across our community and across south Louisiana. We continue to lift Donna’s husband, children and friends in prayer.

The Baton Rouge Area Association of Black Journalists is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Martin Johnson, Dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. Dean Johnson has always served as an ally to this organization and the fight for minority representation in the field of media.

His ties to LSU and Student Media provided him with a depth of experience that young journalists looked to absorb. Many of our current members have been positively impacted by meeting Dean Johnson, if only for a few moments. His door was always open to his students, faculty, staff and other members of the community.

Dean Johnson specialized in media, politics and public opinion. He was a scholar, author and award-winner and deservedly so. But to many, he was so much more than that. Dean Johnson carried a welcoming presence around him treating even the most tense situations with grace. He was a leader in every sense of the word showing that teamwork and collaboration are just as key as individual effort.

When we wanted to host a media workshop for local high school students, we were met with open arms. Whenever we held a luncheon to award scholarships to Black students, he was there. When LSU wanted to officially form an NABJ chapter, he called us immediately.

Dean Johnson lived intentionally, allowing his actions to speak volumes for his character and the plans he had for his department. We are so honored to have shared a table with him and call him “friend.”

Our words cannot properly place the sorrow we feel knowing that Baton Rouge and LSU have suffered such a loss. We continue to lift his wife, children and friends in prayer. We are grieving, but choose to focus on the legacy Dean Johnson leaves behind. You will forever be with us friend.
