When Ira was six years old, a stranger with a gold tooth offered her a piece of candy. Now, her mom had always told her never to take sweets from strangers, but this was her favorite kind, "Llastochka," and Ira grabbed the candy, squeezing her eyes shut tightly, expecting heaven's thunder, just as her mom had warned.

But nothing happened. The man smiled at her, gave her a gentle tap on the nose, and told her to listen to her mom. Ira already did listen to her mom; otherwise, her mom would grab the jump rope and...

That evening, her mom didn’t spare the jump rope either. Her mom found a crumpled candy wrapper in Ira’s coat pocket and started interrogating her about where she had gotten it. Lying to her mom was out of the question – Ira knew that for sure. So, she told her everything.

Oh, how her mom yelled! Ira was afraid her eardrums would burst. And as for the number of times she was hit with the jump rope — it was terrifying to even think about. Luckily, Sashka started crying, and her mom rushed to him, instantly forgetting about her daughter.

Her mom didn’t love Ira, and Ira knew this all too well.

Meanwhile, her mom absolutely adored her second child – Ira’s younger brother, Sasha.

Oksana suddenly froze in the doorway of her apartment and almost fainted from what she saw there.

An hour earlier, her neighbor Rosa, with whom she'd been in touch practically since her first day living in the building, had called her.

"Oksan, are you home right now?" Rosa asked in a strangely soft and somewhat quiet voice.

"No, I’m at my mom’s. I left this morning. After the renovation, I need to help clean up the apartment. There’s a lot to do, so I’ll be staying overnight here. Why? Did you need something?" Oksana asked, suspecting nothing.

"So you’re not at your apartment?" Rosa clarified.

"I'm telling you—I’m at my mom’s! What’s wrong? Get to the point, I don’t have much time," Oksana snapped, slightly annoyed as she held a rag in her hand.

"Oksana, where’s your Mikhail right now?" Rosa asked another strange question, pulling Oksana out of her calm demeanor.

"Rosa, seriously? Just tell me already what’s going on. I don’t have time for this, I’m telling you. Misha’s at work, Yulka’s with my mother-in-law—it’s school break, after all. There’s no one at home, if that’s what you’re asking," Oksana replied nervously.

"No… You’re mistaken, Oksan dear. I just saw a half-dressed smoking girl on your balcony."

One evening, Kostya's phone rang—it was his mother, Elena Petrovna. I curiously glanced at his mobile screen, and seeing this, Kostya pressed the "answer" button and turned on the speakerphone.

— Kostya, hi, I'm calling about something important. — his mother-in-law's voice sounded through the receiver.

— Yeah, Mom, did something happen? — Kostya asked.

— Nothing special, I just wanted to let you know that tomorrow I'm going to the notary to sign over my apartment to Pasha.

Pasha is Kostya's younger brother. My husband often complains that their mom loves Pasha more than him and how much it made him cry when he was a child.

— Well, that doesn't surprise me. — Kostya simply responded to Elena Petrovna.

— You and Nadya have an apartment, but Pashenka has nothing. That's just not right.

— Of course, I practically live at work to pay off the debt for our place with Nadya, and Pasha gets everything handed to him. — Kostya just couldn't hold back.

— Oh, please, don't start playing the victim here. Your wife is more important to you than your mother anyway—you've made that clear. — snapped Elena Petrovna.

— Kids, have you seen my wallet? — Dina asked nervously. — It was in my bag. You didn’t open it, did you?

— I did, — ten-year-old Sonya nodded. — I took out a book to read.

— Me too, — eight-year-old Vanya chimed in. — I put my toy car in there.

A wave of horror washed over Dina. The wallet was gone! And with it, all the money she had saved for their vacation. Now it was all just... gone. Maybe someone stole it on the train, or maybe she had dropped it along the way. What a scatterbrain!

— Look for it, maybe it fell out while we were getting off the train, — Dina ordered. She didn’t want to think about the possibility that someone had taken it.

What were they supposed to do now? The kids wouldn’t get their long-awaited seaside trip. Dina sat down on a bench and lowered her head.

— Excuse me, I heard you lost your wallet?

Dina looked up. An elderly woman in a light blue summer dress and a matching floral hat was looking at her sympathetically.

In front of him, by the roadside, stood a figure. A woman. She wasn’t waving her arms or doing anything to flag down the bus. She was just standing there. Alexei Petrovich squinted, trying to figure out what was off about her. The woman was dressed in a dark winter coat that clearly wasn’t suited for such severe cold, and she was holding something wrapped up in her arms. At first, he thought it was a bag or just some clothing, but as the bus got closer, he noticed that she was holding a child. A boy, bundled up in a warm scarf, looked… oddly fragile.

“What kind of weirdos,” Alexei Petrovich muttered under his breath and habitually slowed down.

When the bus pulled up next to the woman, he rolled down the window and shouted:

“Hey, what are you doing out here in this cold?”

The woman hesitated, clearly not expecting anyone to notice her.

– By the way, – her husband suddenly perked up, – we have a corporate party on Friday. Out of town, at a new venue.

– Will you take me with you? – Marina blurted out before she could think.

Oleg frowned.

– It’s for employees only. No family.

Marina nodded, feeling her cheeks betray her and flush red. It was silly to ask. Silly to hope.

**BETRAYAL IN THE DETAILS**

Friday morning was chaos. Oleg was getting ready for the corporate event, while Marina, as usual, was running around between the kids’ backpacks and breakfast.

Marina froze when her eyes landed on that very photo, the one that once pierced her to the depths of her soul. Family members around her laughed cheerfully as they looked at the picture. Someone even pointed a finger at her.

"Oh wow, this is so funny!" her brother laughed and slapped her on the back, not caring in the slightest about how she might feel at that moment.

Marina glanced at him with resentment. "I never imagined it would always be like before. Why does Roman treat me this way?"

For most people, childhood is filled with pleasant memories, but Marina always remembered hers with pain. She could barely recall the first three years of her life, but the day her mom brought her baby brother home from the hospital was etched into her memory forever. The relatives surrounded the newborn, cooing and doting over him, paying no attention whatsoever to little Marina.

With Roman’s arrival, a new chapter began for their parents—he became their literal "light in the window."

"Our Romochka is such a brave little boy, always stands up for himself," her mom proudly told a friend. "Wanted a toy in the sandbox? Took it. Marina didn't share her apple? He got it by force. He's still so young, but what a personality he already has!"

Roman quickly realized that he could get away with absolutely anything he wanted, and no one would ever hold him accountable.
