Tonight You Belong To Me – Patience and Prudence* [1956] Two sisters, 14 & 11 learned this {1926 by Irving Kaufman} song at camp and they liked to sing it around the house, their dad, Mark McIntyre, orchestra leader and pianist at Liberty Records heard them and recorded a simple demo for their grandparents. Then it got released selling over a million copies practically overnight. The girls became unlikely stars and Liberty Records was saved by its first top ten song ever. It went to #4 in the hot 100. The Lennon Sisters covered it in 1956 as well. Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters sang it in the Steve Martin movie “The Jerk”.

6. Be Bop A-Lula – Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps* 2:34 [1956] B-side of Woman Love, a sultry number U.S. radio wanted no part of it and banned it. Capitol Records flipped the songs and Be Bop A-Lula became the A-side and a hit. Capital Records was hunting for their very own version of Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent was born only 34 days after Presley. Gene had the voice, the sneer, the leather and the unteachable cool they wanted. When Be Bop A-Lula first came out many people thought it was Elvis. In fact, Elvis's Mom Gladys told her son that she loved his new song and Elvis let her know it wasn't his. This song was covered by artists like: The Everly Brothers, The Drifters, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gary Glitter, David Cassidy, The Beatles, Carl Perkins, David Essex, Cliff Richard, Burton Cummings, The Stray Cats, Billy Thorpe, Dion and many, many other artists.
