It’s official! The final draft screenplay for the remaining 9 episodes is complete! New characters, new adventures and a widening mystery are all in there.
Now, I have always written everything I produce with pen and ruled paper before I type it up. Not just because it’s Old School, but because I prefer the ability to easily make side notes or inserts and visually see what I’ve done, no scrolling required.
The tactile nature, too, of writing by hand is something I don’t think I’ll ever quit.
But, of course, scripts for filming need to be formatted, for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is so you can tell how long the script will wind up being as a finished film.
With very few exceptions, the old one-page-equals-one-minute rule is remarkably consistent.
Imagine my surprise, then, when the final screenplay reached a total of 86 pages. I mean, simple math had me thinking, okay, I’ve got 12 episodes at about 5 minutes each, for an hour-long series.
The additional 26 minutes just happened in the process of telling the story. And, trust me, I was keeping things as brief as I thought necessary.
So, I started with an hour-long story and backed myself into a feature film.
Yay?
Well, I’m glad I finished it, but it does add nearly 30% more to the production than I had originally planned. My low-budget sensibilities will be severely tested, that’s for sure.
But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
At least that’s I what I’m saying now. We’ll see what actually happens when the filming starts.
I’m not worried. Much.
