We received an email this morning at 3:00 am suggesting that "nobody cares" about local government meetings or community news, and that tracking county operations is a poor use of time.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, we disagree.

Decisions made in local council, commissioner, and board meetings directly impact your property taxes, your public safety response times, your roads, and your community infrastructure. When residents don't monitor these meetings, those decisions happen in the dark.

SACRIFICING PATROLMEN FOR PAY: Council Punts Public Safety Budget While Sheriff Is Forced to Cut Positions

When law enforcement officers receive a pay raise, the assumption is usually that county leaders allocated extra tax dollars to support local public safety.

In Lawrence County, the reality is very different.

During the August 25 County Council meeting, Sheriff Greg Day presented a structural overhaul to give merit officers a long-overdue $7,000 salary increase. But to make the numbers work, the Sheriff’s Office isn't getting an influx of new funding—Sheriff Day is surrendering two department positions to fund the raises out of his own existing budget.

A Pattern of Self-Funding Essential Operations
This isn't the first time the department has had to cannibalize its own headcount to compensate staff:

March 2026: Sheriff Day eliminated two long-vacant jail officer positions, taking those salary and benefit lines to grant remaining jail staff a $6,000 raise just to bring starting pay up to $22/hr.

August 2026 Proposal: Surrendering two additional positions to cover proposed raises ($7,000 for Merit Officers, $2,500 for Majors, $2,000 for Captains, and $250 for Sergeants).

Court Security & Manpower Under Pressure
The strain on staffing extends directly to courthouse operations. During the meeting, updates revealed a Court Security officer is transitioning to the Bedford Police Department, leaving another operational gap to fill.

Judge Cline addressed the council to publicly praise the Sheriff’s Department for their swift, professional response during an incident. Judge Cline emphasized the critical importance of maintain strong courtroom security and voiced firm support for ensuring the Sheriff’s Department has adequate patrol staffing and manpower on the street.

Competitive Realities vs. Local Budgeting
Sheriff Day emphasized to council members that neighboring counties—like Orange County—are aggressively raising law enforcement pay. With regional agencies pulling from the same applicant pool, keeping starting salaries competitive is a matter of basic retention and officer safety.
