My husband died, but our 4-year-old son said his father had been coming to read him bedtime stories every night. When I set up a camera in his room, I could barely breathe when I saw who was there.
After Daniel died in a car accident a month ago, I was trying my best to hold it together for our son Mason. We had a beautiful family tradition — Daniel would read him bedtime stories, often dressing up as characters from fairy tales.
Then one morning, Mason refused to go to daycare and cried, saying, “Dad read me a story last night. We stayed up late.”
I thought it was just his way of coping with grief… until the next day when he casually mentioned, “Mom, Dad and I finished the dinosaur book yesterday.”
My heart nearly stopped. I gently reminded him that Dad had passed away.
But Mason looked confused and said, “Dad comes to my room every night, Mom. He’s alive.”
That unsettled me deeply.
So I placed an old baby monitor camera on the shelf in his room.
The first night, nothing happened. I almost convinced myself it was all in his imagination.
But the second night, around 1:14 a.m., I was staring at the screen when Mason suddenly woke up, smiled, and waved.
He got out of bed, walked to the window, and started talking happily to someone.
“Oh God… this can’t be happening.”
I could barely breathe when I realized exactly who my son was talking to.
I jumped up and ran to his room as fast as I could.
