woke up in the throes of a panic attack.

“I was hyperventilating, my heart was pounding out of my chest,” he says.

Chris’ then-girlfriend (now wife), Lucy, woke up, and his dog Duke
crawled onto him.

“My dog’s literally laying on my chest trying to calm me down, and Lucy’s telling me ‘It’s OK, breathe, I think
you’re having a panic attack,’” Chris says. “I’d never experienced any-
thing like it—I was always your typical tough guy, sweep that s**t to
the side type of person. And even when I calmed down, I felt sick,
like all clammy and feverish, just a shell of a human. I’d never felt
anything like it in my life.”

Lucy helped Chris through the night. As he came through the
episode and decided to stick with his plan of going on the trip [to Baldface Lodge, BC], she
booked him a new flight and drove him to the airport after he’d
managed some broken sleep. At Baldface, Chris was overwhelmed
by the social situation. He retreated to his room. “I slept through
the whole first day,” he says. “Austen () came to check on me, and I told him the whole story. I was so glad he was there, and I did end up riding and trying to socialize and doing what you’re supposed to do, but it took me months to properly process that event and realize I
have to take care of my mental health.

“I know it’s weird to talk about
mental health when it’s tied to these incredible experiences, but
they come with a lot of pressure that I’d been ignoring for a decade.
You’re living in this heightened state for seven months of the year,
processing a ton of adrenaline, and having all this positive reinforce-
ment, these pats on the back. It’s amazing, of course, but it’s not a
normal life. Recognizing that was a huge help. I haven’t had another
episode like that, but I’ve had moments, little cues, that I’ve learned
to listen to and remove myself from certain situations.”

Even the most badass boarders have to tend to their feelings. Read about how the powerhouse Chris Rasman holds space for his in his feature profile, “Release the Rasman: Chris Rasman Listens to Cues,” written by for Issue 22.2

“Punk is nuanced in its spectrum of aggressively loving juxtapositions, and it is abundantly clear that .menace embodies such swagger. The 23-year-old out of Denver, CO, recently riffed her way onto snowboarding’s mainstage through the Salt Lake City, UT, scene, inspiring the hearts and minds of many who have witnessed her attack handrails with streaks of green hair flying. Egan, aka “Egg,” has proven herself a reckonable 4-foot-11-inch force in the streets and beyond, consistently turning heads since her breakout moment at the Dustbox’s “Be Somebody” event in 2020. That’s where she faced a massive joint just prior to the competition, before proceeding to smoke her competition, too, which notably included some of the most talented women in the game...”

Handrails hate to see her coming. Read about .menace in her feature profile in Issue 24.4 of , with words by and photos by and more.

We are devastated to hear of the loss of Alex Pashley and Jeff Keenan. As husbands, fathers, friends and mentors, few folks embodied the best side of the snowboard community like these two. They both approached the mountains with humility, grace, and a great sense of humor, and were always there to help others succeed.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the guide who lost his life, and we hope that the surviving member of their party recovers quickly and fully from their injuries.

To all affected by this tragedy, we love you. We are in this together.

“Here in Vermont, we have a lot of faith. We’ve got to in order to stay sane. We have to say that next winter will be good. And yes, it will be. Snow will fall and it’ll stay cold and more will fall on top of that. This winter, for example, is gonna be great. But the past decade has had its ups and downs. Those of us who enjoy turning on anything other than manmade hardpack have had to get creative. That’s how, in this little corner of the snowboard world lovingly nicknamed the ‘Ice Coast,’ a handful of riders have leaned into the joy of powsurfing...”

“Reminiscing on the past winter, a season full of memories can be broken down into a handful of standout shared experiences—a collection of literal ups and downs that vary from mundane to transformative which will forever hold a place in our hearts and minds. They range from low stress sessions to critical situations demanding absolute focus. From vision quests on a bucket list objective to sharing these wild spaces with friends and loved ones, the key element here is the landscape...” — writes in the introduction for “Ideal Scenarios in the High Sierra”.
