A 51-year-old Acme man has been charged with felony attempting to elude police after allegedly jumping off a Slater Road bridge into the Nooksack River to avoid arrest on August 31. Matthew Pruett was found on the west bank near Rayhorst Road and told police he fled because he had outstanding warrants. He pleaded not guilty to the felony charge and several misdemeanors and is due back in court September 30.

The Vikings volleyball team opened GNAC conference play Thursday night with a hard-fought five-set win over Northwest Nazarene University at Carver Gymnasium. Delaney Speer led the way with 22 kills, with Aly Skagen and Jasmine Terry each adding 11 more. A great way to start conference play.

The Lynden Music Festival returns October 7-11, spreading live music through the cafes, pubs, restaurants, and venues of downtown Lynden. The festival was founded in 2009 by Terhi Miikki-Broersma, a Finnish musician and bassoonist who brought the community festival spirit of her hometown in Helsinki to Whatcom County. Five days, multiple genres, and locals say it is absolutely worth the drive.

If your Saturday needs a little adventure, the Run with the Chums 5K is back in Birch Bay tomorrow, and this year it includes the Smolt Sprint Obstacle Course for kids under 10. The kids course is themed around the real obstacles salmon face on their journey to the ocean, including culverts, eagles, bears, and strong currents. It is put together by Whatcom Conservation District and makes for a genuinely fun family morning.

Mark Raaka, a former Whatcom County Health Department employee, was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Wednesday for assaulting his ex-wife. Raaka had been placed on paid administrative leave in May 2024 after a protection order violation was reported, but was not fired until October 2025 following a formal investigation. The case raised questions about how long he remained on the payroll before termination.

State regulators have approved an average 22.2% rate increase for individual plans, affecting self-employed workers, early retirees, and those who do not get coverage through an employer. is closing Alm Road at Bridge 308, between Highway 9 and Gillies Road, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily starting Sunday, September 14 through Thursday, September 18. No traffic, including emergency vehicles, will be able to cross during work hours. Properties on both sides of the bridge remain accessible, and a signed detour will be in place. This work is weather-dependent, so plans could shift.
