Research, metal detecting, relic hunting, archaeology, fun, woods and treasure hunting never gets old. If these old sites could talk, they would tell a different story. The thrill of finding treasures lost to the past will never get old.

📜 Experimental Archaeology: Making Woodland Period Pottery 🏺🔥
🎥 Watch as we step back in time to recreate a Woodland Period pottery vessel using only traditional methods and natural materials—just like they did over 1,000 years ago!
🌿 Sourcing Materials
We start by digging local clay straight from the earth—no store-bought supplies here! To make the clay workable and reduce cracking during firing, we add natural temper made from sand and crushed grit, just like ancient potters did. Every scoop is hand-processed and screened to remove roots, rocks, and impurities.
✋ Hand Building the Vessel
Using the coil-and-smooth method, the pot is slowly shaped by hand—no potter’s wheel. This ancient technique allows full control over the form while staying true to prehistoric styles. Notice the thick walls and round base typical of Woodland Period pottery, designed for open-fire cooking.
🌀 Surface Treatment & Decoration
We smooth the surface with stones and water, then apply simple incised and stamped patterns using bone tools and natural cordage. These decorations aren’t just aesthetic—they reflect cultural identity and may have served functional purposes too.
🔥 Open-Pit Firing
After drying for days, the pot is fired in an open fire pit using wood and bark fuel. No kilns! This risky, high-stakes process reaches temps of 600–900°C. The color and texture? 100% dependent on fire placement and oxygen flow.
🎯 Why This Matters
Experimental archaeology helps us connect directly with the past—understanding not just what ancient people made, but how and why they did it. Every crack, success, and failure teaches us more.

Heading out to do a little treasure diving! Wish us luck on our treasure hunt. This is some of the finds from our last trip down south.

This is a picture of a cannon ball fragment and 3 iron case shot. These are from the American civil war fired in agression.
