1967 Lamborghini Marzal

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace drove this one-off Bertone concept around the Monaco Grand Prix circuit on May 7, 1967, just two months after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Marcello Gandini’s design featured dramatic gullwing doors providing access to a cabin enclosed by 48.4 square feet of glass, including a lightly tinted roof panel.

A hexagonal motif appeared throughout the interior and extended to the Campagnolo magnesium wheels with three-eared spinners. Six Marchal quartz-iodine headlamps defined the slender nose, which incorporated an innovative rubber-faced bumper. The body was primarily steel, with an aluminum hood for easier lifting.

The unique prototype powerplant consisted of a transversely mounted 2.0-liter (120-cubic-inch) inline-six (essentially half of a Miura V12) positioned behind the rear axle. Three Weber 40 DCOE carburetors fed the engine, producing about 175 horsepower through a five-speed gearbox.

Independent suspension with triangular wishbones, coil springs, telescopic dampers, and anti-roll bars supported both ends, while four-wheel disc brakes provided stopping power. Estimated top speed was around 140 mph.

The Espada four-seater entered production the following year, adapting the Marzal’s aesthetic without gullwing doors or the rear-engine layout.
