Rest in Power, Freddie Jackson (1956–2026)

The voice that soundtracked a generation of love stories has gone quiet. R&B legend Freddie Jackson passed away Monday night, days after his 70th birthday, his family has announced.

Born in Harlem, Freddie first found his voice singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church. He went on to front the funk band Mystic Merlin and sang backup for Melba Moore before his breakthrough came.

In 1985 his debut album Rock Me Tonight changed everything. The title track sat at #1 on the R&B charts for six weeks, and "You Are My Lady" earned him Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Hits like "Jam Tonight," "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," and "Tasty Love" made him a defining voice of the Quiet Storm era and a late-night radio staple.

He kept creating for four decades, releasing My First Love in 2023. After his kidney disease diagnosis in 2024, he faced it with courage and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness for others.

Freddie gave us the songs we danced to, fell in love to, and still play today. That gift lives on.

Please keep his family and loved ones in your prayers.
