There’s a quiet kind of role in being a stepmom.
You see things.
You hear things.
You sit in rooms and in silence, watching kids carry things they shouldn’t have to carry.
I’ve read the messages.
I’ve sat in therapy.
I’ve watched their faces when they don’t say a word—but you can feel everything they’re holding in. And lately… I’m seeing the shift. The frustration. The hurt.
And it breaks me.
Because kids are not meant to live in the middle of adult pain. They’re not meant to sort through conflict, or question themselves because of someone else’s choices.
We can’t go back and rewrite the past.
But we also can’t keep handing them the weight of it!
They already have their own things to work through.
There’s more I could say. A lot more!
But sometimes protecting them means staying measured… because becoming the loudest voice could cause more damage than healing.
Loving our kids well means owning our mistakes.
It means choosing accountability over excuses.
It means putting their emotional safety above our pride.
They don’t owe us anything for the choices we made as adults.
They deserve the space to grow, to figure out who they are, and to feel safe doing it.
And I will always be someone who protects that.
