Maryland Lyric Opera mourns the legendary Leon Fleisher, who died today. Mr. Fleisher played with the MDLO Orchestra November 12, 2019 at the age of 91, and all who were present at Strathmore will never forget his ability to control time and seemingly commune with Mozart. Our thoughts are with his family, including MDLO Principal Harpist Deborah Fleisher, and the generations of musicians and music fans who were inspired by his artistry and humanity.
MDLO is very proud to support the work of Food & Friends who prepare and deliver thousands of medically tailored meals to folks in our region in need. Bravi Tutti to their team! Nice looking wheels!
You may have noticed some of our vans sporting a fresh look these past few months. Today we want to shout out another branded van sponsor, Maryland Lyric Opera! With support from Food & Friends donor and MDLO Founder and Artistic Director, Brad Clark, we’re thrilled to have this beauty out on the road.

🎶🎥 Dear Friends, we have another episode of "A Taste of MDLO" for you to enjoy tonight. As many of you know, earlier in June we were supposed to present a new production of Le Nozze di Figaro directed by the legendary Ruggero Raimondi. Sadly, this project had to be put on hold, but we remain hopeful we will do it next season, in the calendar 2021.
In the meantime, we put together a video which features our amazing MDLO Institute alumni Jose Sacin - Baritone, Mary Feminear, soprano, Youna Hartgraves performing excerpts of Le Nozze di Figaro in concert. We should mention 😎 that the wonderful Mary Feminear will be singing the role of Countess Almaviva in our new production of The Marriage of Figaro. We truly cannot wait!!! 🎼🎊🎉
The video also features a clip from the concert of MDLO Orchestra with Leon Fleisher at Strathmore, from past fall.
We hope you enjoy it!

🎶 🎬 Dear Friends, we have been very privileged to work with many phenomenal artists, those who are still at the dawn of their careers as well as world-renowned musicians. Even though just at the moment we can't present them on stage, we would love for you to get to know them “off stage”.
So tonight we are starting a new digital initiative “In Conversation with MDLO”: an informal chat in our “virtual” studio. The artists will join us from their homes to discuss their careers, their dream roles, how they spend this pandemic “downtime”, what they most look forward to when they will get back to work, and other interesting issues.
We also encourage you to ask questions in the comments, so that after the conversation we can have a Q&A session.
The first guest in our digital studio is the renowned baritone Mark Delavan. Last September we were thrilled to present Mark in our double-bill of masterpieces, Puccini's Il Tabarro and Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. Prior to that, Mark performed in the concert performance of La Fanciulla del West in our inaugural season. In an illustrious career Mark has sung with the Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, San Francisco Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu. His repertoire includes a wide range of important baritone roles such as Falstaff, Wotan, Amonasro, Simon Boccanegra, Nabucco, and Scarpia.
Please meet Mark Delavan!

🌹 🎼 🎊 Today we celebrate the birthday of Igor Stravinsky, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. He was born on this day, in 1882, in St Petersburg.
Fun fact about Stravinsky. While both of his parents were musicians, his father was the first bass of the Imperial Mariinsky Theater and his mother was an excellent pianist, and while Igor was exposed to music from an early age and took piano lessons since he was nine, his parents did not want him to become a musician and directed him towards law studies. He entered the University of St. Petersburg in 1901.
There, in a twist of fate, he befriended Vladimir Rimsky-Korsakov, the youngest son of the celebrated composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In the summer of 1902, he visited their home in Heidelberg, Germany, where he showed some of his compositions to the senior Rimsky-Korsakov, who was so Impressed by what he heard, that he offered Stravinsky to take private lessons in harmony and counterpoint. These lessons continued till the death of Rimsky-Korsakov in 1908.
Stravinsky’s father died from cancer in late 1902, leaving Igor financially independent. The young composer could now freely pursue his music passion and expand his circle of friends to include such renowned artists as Claude Debussy, Cesar Franck, Emmanuel Chabrier and Paul Dukas, who influenced the young musician.
Here for you is Igor Stravinsky in Conversation

🎶🎧 As we have recently recommended a couple of Schönberg's pieces for you to watch, including the Gurre Lieder, we thought we should share this fun fact:
In 1932 Leopold Stokowski conducted the American premiere of Arnold Schönberg's "Gurre-Lieder" at the Metropolitan Opera House, Philadelphia. RCA Victor recorded the concert on a total of 14 double-sided records. The world premiere recording of Schönberg's two-hour oratorio was a great achievement at the time. Repeat editions of this musically extraordinary event are regularly released on CD. In the 1930s, listeners still had to turn the record over or change it every four minutes. With the unprocessed transfer of Schönberg's set by Österreichische Mediathek, this experience is preserved. During the live broadcast on 28 May at 7:30 pm, you will hear excerpts from the "Gurre-Lieder" as well as from Stokowski's introduction to the work.

“The range of emotions he can communicate with his half-divine, half-human voice appears limitless.” — Wall Street Journal Mark Delavan, a singer of “incisive vocal power and fierce theatrical acuity,” is sought after throughout the United States and Europe for the most demanding roles in his operatic repertoire. He regularly appears in the title roles of Der fliegende Holländer, Falstaff, and Rigoletto, and as Iago in Otello, Scarpia in Tosca, Jochanaan in Salome, and Amonasro in Aida. In addition, as a strong character actor on stages throughout the country, he has proved himself a crossover artist of immense skill.
Susan Bullock has been described as “...always profoundly musical, she brings tears to one’s eyes with a tenderness of phrasing that seems second nature.” by Opera Magazine. To kick off Fanciulla Del West Spotlight, we present internationally acclaimed soprano Susan Bullock! One of her most distinctive roles, Wagner’s Brünnhilde has garnered outstanding praise leading Bullock to become the first ever soprano to sing four consecutive cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Royal Opera House under Sir Antonio Pappano as part of the London 2012 Festival. Her unique position as one of the world’s most sought-after British dramatic sopranos was recognized by the award of a CBE in June 2014. Susan leads our cast as Minnie after having sung the role at English National Opera and the Edinburgh International Festival. She will be featured in FDW on Friday, September 14th.
